Wolves should have the ability to catch fish, to heal themselves OR give it to you, on shallow water. (1 block deep)
By simply standing or walking around on shallow water, your wolf might catch a fish.
If the wolf is missing any hearts, it will automatically eat the fish. This will give it one heart.
If the wolf has full hearts, it will approach you and drop it so you can pick it up.
The chances are 3% every second while standing on shallow water next to a fishable larger water source.
(the rate may be altered)
The wolf will not catch any fish if it's fighting a mob or if it's sitting down.
Wild wolves cannot catch fish.
Alternatively, you can feed it fish yourself, which will also heal one heart.
A possible issue would be multiple wolf fishing. Since a player can have huge amounts of wolves, they can catch a ton of fish. This can be fixed by setting a wolf limit of 2-3 or making it so only 1-2 wolves can catch fish at a time.
Simple suggestion, yet this might require a new animation.
I always wanted wolves to eat fish, dunno about it just automatically healing in water... (or "catching fish" as you called it)

Why is there even a suggestions forum? Just wondering. Notch doesn't even check these, and there are quite a lot of good suggestions such as the nether update one.
Wouldn't it be better to rather introduce a mob that actually could catch fish given their physics? The bone structure of a wolf is far too rigid to allow the kind of movements that would let it catch a fish, which is why wolves and dogs don't eat fish IRL. Bears and cats on the other hand have much more flexible paws and thus can learn the necessary techniques for catching fish. And really, why shouldn't MineCraft have mobs like Bears, Mountain Lions and the other large cats?
I like the idea of a tameable mob that can serve a purpose other then just combat, I just think it would be better then to introduce a new mob like a bear to do that.
And on that subject, here's a short list of other mobs that would be quite natural to add to their respective environments in MineCraft:

That's a possibility, though I'd rather limit the amount of wolves you can have. 30 wolves is pretty OP!
