Greetings People, as an avid player of Minecraft I have always been less than amazed at its one-strategy combat system: click and back up. Although different monsters and different terrain do provide a few twists on this base, it still has room to improve. I propose that a shield slot be added to the inventory screen. This will create a system of defense other than strafing.
The left shift button or mouse3 button would be used as the Shield Button because your fingers rest naturally on them. The sneak key would be allocated to R as nothing is already there and it is easily accessible. Pushing the Shield Button would pull your shield up to block spiders from pouncing, arrows from skeletons, fireballs from gasts, and sword strikes from zombie pigmen. A player would not be able to strike with their sword or bow and arrows until they put down their shield.
I wish to discuss this topic and any different changes you have to this topic, thank you.

I think we need a shield, but i do not think we should move the sneak button. Also, how would this affect explosions? Would creepers not explode because they couldn't see you any more or would they explode and do massive damage to the shield?
