This is an idea for a new mob type, based off the ideas discussed in this topic.
The Wraith! (aka Night Bringer)
It is a passive mob that drops nothing (ideas? I don't like the idea of obsidian, and I think a lantern would be OP) and is 3 blocks tall, 1 block wide and 1 block thick. Only spawns on hard difficulty (or perhaps a new difficulty/game mode)
HP: 1 heart
Damage: 0
Spawn: on Earth or over water in light 14 or lower
Behavior
These would have a rare chance of spawning when the sun sets, perhaps around 1/10 chance each night and only 1 per night possible. It only spawns above ground, as underground this thing would be OP, so lets say it has to be above layer 64 (sea-level). It could spawn on anything other mobs can, plus over water. Perhaps it only spawns in rain, or it starts raining when it spawns.
It moves slowly (25% player speed or so), but constantly in more or less one direction ignoring the player and other mobs. Perhaps moving from where it spawns towards the players spawn point (which is likely the last bed they slept in) then past it into the distance.
Scary bit is that it can phase through blocks if it can't move over them and it freezes water underneath it for a short time. If there's a 1-block tall wall it'll simply move over, but 2-block tall and it'll phase through it. This would be used to move straight through the player's home.
If it phases in such a way that it reaches a pool of water it will rise upward until it is out (potentially phasing through a ceiling).
It is affected by gravity, but it falls slowly like chickens, thus takes no fall damage.
Fighting
The Wraith does no damage, but it is a significant threat.
In a certain radius, say 20 blocks, torches (and lanterns) go out until it is far enough away for them to be alight again. Glowstone blocks, lava, and fire (Netherrack or otherwise) will still provide light.
It also acts as a spawner for zombies just like a dungeon, so even if a player is near-by or looking towards it, zombies will still appear. This means that even well protected homes may be invaded by zombies!
He is intangible and will not be hurt by most means. The only way to damage it is to light it on fire, (flint&steel, lava, ect.) which kills it nearly instantly due to its low hp. In rain this would be harder, but still possible. It also happens when the sun rises. The wraith will also despawn after sunrise if it does not die from sun exposure.
If the player dies, it will despawn as well. This is so that if the player dies do to the wraith, there won't be even more zombies, and the lights will be back on. Otherwise it might keep killing the player over and over.
Appearance and Sound
Here's a poorly done mock-up of it's appearance:
It's a dark, semi-transparent, cloaked figure with red eyes
It makes the sound of heavy breathing when nearby and a wailing moan when damaged.
Difficulty Concerns
This might be a bit difficult of a mob, since it could let creepers into your base (unlikely, but possible). Perhaps this could be added only to Hard difficulty, for those who are looking for more danger from mobs.
Maybe if they do spawn in Normal or Easy, they don't reduce torch light enough to let mobs spawn, but still let zombies spawn around them
Conclusion: TL;DR
Wraiths would make for an occasional challenge that would add spice to the game, and flex the muscles of veteran players and chill the spines of all. Suddenly an impenetrable base is compromised and you once again have to think on your toes just like the first night!
Let me know what you think, and give me some feedback!
I really like this mob idea simply because it wouldn't appear all that often (achievement for slaying it, perhaps?), and it offers a different kind of gameplay from the other mobs. Rather than actively aggressively attacking the player, it simply offers the possibility of spawning more monsters next to the player, even in their home.
Its possible you could have it drop a record (maybe a new one, or one of the rumored new ones that will be added into vanilla Minecraft). Or even have it drop some kind of cloak which causes monsters not to see you, but causes them to spawn closer to you/in higher light levels; a "dual-edged sword", so to speak, that has a benefit and a drawback, thus preventing it from being overpowered.
Regardless of whether or not you like my ideas, I think that this mob concept is amazing.
I really wish Notch would pay more attention to people's mob ideas, because people tend to have really good ones. This included.

for you. And Notch doesn't pay attention to mob suggestions because of the noobs who suggest stuff like super creepers.
Mmm.
I'd like the idea of it having a much rarer chance of spawning than 1/10, and even then only on hard difficulty, but then it should also hunt out the player when it spawns. That would be intense. However, then it would be easy to trick into lava..
The only problem I see with the request now is that the lighting being put out around it would cause lag similar to the moving light source, just backwards.
You mean now when I go out at night & it rains (my favorite weather) I'll not be safe?
NO.
Only at night when mobs would spawn anyway, and only on hard difficulty.

Interesting concept, but it should still drop something interesting... exclusive Music Disks, perhaps?
I like that idea.

Hmm... maybe it could turn lava into cobblestone just like water into ice. And I don't think lag should be an issue, since it's just like flipping a torch on and off with redstone, not like moving it around,
I actually had an idea for a mob that would temporarily douse all light sources in its vicinity... so basically this.
Given that this mob does no damage, and is easy to kill, I'd say it would work on any difficulty. Maybe it should just be a rare spawn. It would be cool if it killed the lights in such a way that it's nearly impossible to see what it looks like.

The only real reason I don't think it should be at least on Easy is that it could let mobs into your base, a good batch of zombies and potentially skeletons or creepers.
Well it would be at night and be nearly black, so it would blend in rather well :tongue.gif: Maybe a touch brown-green for blending in more
Yeah, but then again, mobs don't spawn within about 24 blocks of you... considering it would have a limited range of darkening, it wouldn't be so bad.
I like the idea of something preventing you from being totally safe. It's become to easy to be safe.
Yeah, but then if you weren't near your house you'd still get them inside, and zombies would spawn regardless, since the Wraith is acting as a spawner.
Maybe give some sort of indication the Wraith has spawned? That way players could get back to their base to stop creepers/skeleton spawning.
I can imagine a whole server being slaughtered by this beast. And we still need to figure out a good drop.
Well SMP is supposed to be Normal difficulty right? Keeping it a Hard-only spawn would solve that.
Also I think that someone on the server would be able to light the guy up.
If all else fails, just make it not spawn in SMP.

Drop a gray music disk, that plays spooky music O.O
Nice idea, though I think it's red eyes should glow, and if you attempt to attack it with a sword, it just gets angry and spawns more mobs.
Idk, I like the idea that it just ignores the temporal world for the most part...
But a sharp hiss of annoyance would be scary :tongue.gif:
