So I have been playing Minecraft for about a month, and have been truly impressed with almost every aspect of this game save one. While either searching for another suitable build site, or during some heavy exploring I find that getting turned around or lost becomes a real issue. At least for me I find this problem persists even with the compass. As for building "Watch Towers" every so often, it only works above ground and I'm one for not wanting to marr the landscape with 1X20 piles of dirt.
So here it is, my suggestion: An equipable "HUD Device" created through a fairly complex recipe at the crafting table. Now when I say a "HUD Device" I'm not suggesting a 5th sense god sight you see in alot of FPS's; but rather a simple map that would display the Immediate area with any unexplored block as black (Fog Of War). The other utilities the Heads Up Display would bring is a true NSEW compass, character spawn point indicator, and a clock. The HUD would successfuly combine the current clock and compass freeing up 2 inventory spaces, and if your like me 2 hotkeys as well. And as for the recipe I believe it should be:
= Compass = Clock = Redstone
P.S. I do apologize if a similar suggestion has been posted.
