I think a spear would be nice. You will be able to damage mobs from 1 more block away than the sword. Also the damage will be the same as an iron sword. You can throw the spear by pressing right-click, it will make one less heart damage than the melee attack. And if you hit the mob you can get it back once you killed it.
This is how to craft it.

I'd be up for greater damage and range but reduced knockback and longer cooldown time, or really anything balanced and moderately accurate. Realistically, a hole in the belly made by stone is not much less likely to kill you than a hole in the belly made by the finest steel point ever made. In fact, the roughness of stone is more likely to tear and infect important organs. If the hole can be made at all with a stabbing weapon, it's going to hurt a lot. Cutting edges really do benefit from good materials and skilled craftsmanship, though.
You know what would be cool? Spears doing the same damage no matter what material they're made of, but cooldown time changing instead. It's also been rattling in the back of my head that spears should be more effective than swords at lower material grades, but less effective at diamond-grade. I don't care whether they can be thrown or not, but I want spears. Lots of people have been suggesting it and I think there's a good reason why.
The cheap throwable spear in the OP seems feasible to me if tweaked right, and IMO ought to be stackable to sixteen like snowballs. I don't think such a weapon should do much more damage than an arrow, if any more at all. If not disposably cheap, it should not be stackable and should do high damage as a projectile. Either way, it should be possible to recover.
And it would be easier to balance extra weapons in general if there were more variation in monster HP. Currently, the common selection of monsters dies in two hits for diamond, three for iron, four for stone, and five for wood. It doesn't have to be the same for everything, and even small changes could make it so otherwise similar and well-balanced weapons work differently against different monsters. If weapon A does 3 damage and weapon B does 2.5 damage but hits a little faster, then B will be better for a monster with 10 HP but A might be better for a monster with 11 HP.
Take a look at the very first topic in this forum. Not what you might expect for detail on weapons, but it's there.

Struck by a radioactive lightning strike, the charged creeper optimizes the holographic computer screen projected by his mind to make his explosions larger and more powerful. BEWARE THE CREEPER!
I object to the idea that stat-swapped weapons are a waste of time as outlined in that thread. Why use a spear when it does the same thing as a sword? Well, why the **** do we have three different kinds of tree? Why did I build a "fishing" pier high over land and fling creepers to their doom every day with a fishing pole? Why have bricks when we already have stone and cobblestone? Stretching it a little further, what good will an eighty-foot golden cock and balls do that an eighty-foot 1X1 pillar can't? I would use a spear even if it were identical to a sword except more expensive to produce. Slightly different fighting tactics don't add much to the game, but it gives you an excuse to use something more interesting than the same old sword that's been there since the beginning.
Okay so this'll work, but can you replace the flint with any material? Also, I think you should throw from a longer distance. Why don't you just make arrows with a different tip?

That's a diamond arrow.
But yes, a Javelin could work. I mean the rocket launcher.
