I've seen some good ship suggestions before but.... I just didn't like them as much as my idea. My idea is to have various presets of ships, and you're able to modify them from there. But first, you need to craft a dock block.
A dock block functions as your ship creation workbench. When placing it an arrow will appear to show where ships will be deposited upon creation. Once you craft a ship it is automatically deployed into the area the arrow is pointing to, like a ship dispenser (note: ship modifications will not be deployed like ships). The dock block has a 9x9 crafting square to create ships and ship modifications. The ships have various ups and downs. Ship modifications can help the ship overall. Here are the ships and the modifications available for them:
Longship:
The premier viking vessel, also used by other civilizations. This ship is somewhat easy to craft and is the fastest of the ships, but is also the most fragile (the current boat doesn't count as a ship). it is able to seat eleven people, 1 driver and 10 passengers. Like all ships, you can freely walk on the vessel, even while it's moving. There is 3 modifications available for this ship (you can also dye the wool blocks used for the sails):
Oars (oars increase speed if there is a passenger manning it. You need to craft all of them individually and place them on the sides. There is a maximum of 10 oars, 1 for each passenger)
Dragon's head (a wooden dragon's head prevents mob spawning near the boat. It also looks badass)
Side Shields (acts as cover for passengers. You need to craft all of them individually and put them on the ship's sides)
Trireme:
The ancient siege ship of times past. This ship is moderately difficult to craft and is the slowest of all ships, but is very sturdy and can be armed for war! It is able to seat 21 people, 1 driver and 20 people. Like all ships, you can walk freely on the ship, even while moving. There is various modifications for this ship (you can also dye the wool blocks used for the sails):
Ballista (This is a giant crossbow mounted on the ship. It requires 3 passengers to operate)
Catapult (An alternative to the Ballista, this can devastate targets, but the ammo travels slowly)
Battering ram (contact with other ships most likely means death for them. This also acts as a brace for when hitting land from the front)
Landing bridges (hitting land from the front will stop the boat and extend bridges from the top deck to the ground. The driver presses a button to destroy the bridges and move back. Very useful for docking and invasions)
Galleon:
A very reliable ship from the 1600s. This ship is quite difficult to craft and travels at a medium pace. Unlike other ships, this needs to be crafted into separate pieces, then assembled together. It is able to hold 21 people, 1 driver and 20 passengers. There is no place to sit on the ship, so you walk about freely. There is various modifications for this ship (once again, you can dye the sails):
Cannons (only on top deck. You need to individually craft and place them. Right clicking with gunpowder will consume the gunpowder and fire the cannon. Requires reload afterwards. Very high damage, but very costly)
Improved captain's quarters (some tidying up, as well as providing a map of the map you're playing on)
Improved crew quarters (a bed and chest for every passenger. Requires individual crafting and placement)
Firing ports ( Bottom deck firing ports for arrows and future ranged weapons)
Ironclad:
The ******* child of a minecart and the Kraken. This ship is extremely difficult to craft and travels at a slow pace, but is the strongest of ships. Unlike other ships, this needs to be crafted into separate pieces, then assembled together. Also unlike other ships, this requires coal to operate. it can hold 31 people, 1 driver and 30 passengers. There is no place to sit on the ship, so you walk about freely. There is some modifications for this ship:
Cannons (Below deck cannons. These operate the same as the Galleon's cannons. There is no above-deck cannons)
Huge Furnace ( A bigger furnace which can hold 3 stacks of coal to power the ship)
Submarine (this closes the firing ports and the entrance at the top of the ship, and submerges the ship. the driver can control how much the ship is submerged. While underwater, you can't fire cannons. The driver can choose to emerge above water and open the firing ports and entrance when he wants to.
That's all my ideas. Although a few changes may be necessary to make this happen, like lowering the depth of the water, I believe this would be a great addition to minecraft.

I think Creepers just need a hug. Turn that frown, upside down!
sound's like a good idea, maybe p.m. that guy who made the planes mod. I believe his name is jamioflan. His planes mod uses some of the concepts you have suggested like a specialized crafting block specifically for making planes.
I support this. it's well thought out, and pretty original. My idea for bigger ships was combining three ships, a log, and wool in the crafting grid to get a 3x2x3(sail) sailboat. This makes my idea look pretty weak. you're really going places with a mind like that.

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.
Sounds alright. I'd prefer not to be forced to start with a preset myself - I'd find it cheap. I'll take my unrealistic built-from-scratch physics-free water bases, with a side option of preset ships, please.
And the dragon head/side shields can't serve any real purpose until we get some ocean mobs (plus if you get the dragon bit, you wouldn't need the shields, would you?) :tongue.gif: But besides that, it's all good.
