Decay is an idea that's probably been mentioned before, but I couldn't find any like this.
I had an idea that when you didn't play on a world for a long time, your structures began to decay. Planks and stones would either disappear or turn into half-steps. Other blocks would either be gone or turn into one of these new types:
Blocks
Wood : Mossy Logs. Logs with moss, like Mossy Cobblestone.
Glass : Broken Glass. Glass with crack textures in it.
Obsidian : Obsidian Half-Blocks
Sand : Sandstone
Gravel : Disappears
Crafted Items
Crafting table : Molding Crafting Bench. Gives you a 2x3 crafting bench (loss of 1 row). Allows you to make another bench, a sword, sticks, planks and the like. Only essentials.
Furnace :Furnace:: Cobblestone Half-Step. Has a chance of dropping coal nearby.
Bricks :brick:: Drops 4 bricks.
Iron(Block): Rusted. Run through the crafting bench to make new again.
Bookshelves : Shelves. Acts like a chest, but with only 2 rows of storage.
All other things I did not mention simply disappear, save Iron doors. They stay, but rust. Have a chance of failing and not opening, ever.
Natural Landscape
Longer periods of time not playing will result in the world decaying. The way I see it, any block with at least 5 blocks of air above it may disappear. Stone may turn to Cobblestone. Also, the roof of a cave may "collapse". All blocks above it to the "top" layer disappear, revealing a hole. Overhangs may fall, resulting in a pile of dirt, stone, and cobblestone below.
Conclusion
I think a system like this would add diversity to Minecraft. Keep in mind that the world would have to have been played at least once to begin decay, so if you haven't played a downloaded map yet it won't be destroyed.
If this was implemented, it would give us a reason to return to worlds we left behind. Now we could explore ruins of our great buildings, if we wanted. Worlds we had explored would be new again. So if you like it, please comment. Goodbye.

Gold is MEANT to be useless.
Wrong. It's meant for me to look like a pimp.

If not, then all the handwork of people will rot away like
Wraiths: Boss-like mob for Hard!
Not really a fan of the idea. I don't want my structures dying!!!
However, perhaps cobblestone near water will eventually become mossy cobble?
If it aint worth fixing dont fix it.
