This idea relates to the map generator. Currently, if you mine below level 20, you can obtain practically any ore in game. This means that mining operations tend to be concentrated in the lower region of the map, leaving 20+ virtually untapped.
Therefore, the map generator should: Increase the incidence of particular ores - such as Lapis, Redstone, Gold - in particular layers. For example, in layer 48-56, gold could be fairly common, particularly around water sources. Around 32-40, Redstone would be predominant. And, for example, iron could still be found on any level, but it would be concentrated 20+ Limit certain ores to being generated in higher regions. So, instead of being generated all over the world, Lapis Lazuli would be found EXCLUSIVELY between 32 and 48. Therefore, if the player wants lapis, they would HAVE to mine at this level. Note that this means ores could be made more common, as it'd take more effort on the player's part to mine all the minerals (since their mining operation would need to cover a larger area).
With this idea, I also suggest that clay be found beneath rivers/lakes under the dirt. So there is more clay in the world, you just have to know where to look.
I don't think this is a good idea because then there would be no point in digging deep if you can just find everything near the top of the map. Unless there is a greater concentration of ores in the bottom 20 levels of the map. ( Yes! First post. )
No, there would still be ores below 20... maybe all of them. And diamonds would still only be found below 20. The difference is that if you want a particular ore (say, lapis), you may HAVE to mine at a particular level or you may be better off mining at a particular level.
I think stuff should still be pretty far down, but I do like the idea of having certain layers be more likely to hold a particular ore. Like maybe still have everything below 20 or at most 30, then have 20-23 have more gold than other layers and 16-19 have more redstone.
Don't make anything more common, just make players able to have a target ore for mining. That way if you really need redstone for such and such, go to the level it's most common and dig there. You'd get more redstone and less of other stuff, so overall nothing is changed but distribution of the ores.

Well, that's kinda what I'm going for. The problem with this is that most people will still just sit around levels 10-20... but hey, most people don't use redstone circuits, I guess :tongue.gif:
Why not have settings in a configuration file (both single player and multiplayer server) where you can adjust the spawn rate of ore and what level they normally spawn at, and if that is absolute or can float? Absolute means it will not spawn outside of that range, and float has a slim chance of spawning outside of the range
Then everyone can customize it to their liking. There would be defaults (annotated in comment sections of the file) that it is preset to, but you can make it easier or harder to find certain ores by adjusting the range or the chance. Personally I tend to find coal too often and don't find diamond enough. I end up with entire chests of coal after digging 2 or 3 mines or caves, but end up with 1-2 diamond. Even hunting low around lava pools doesn't turn up near enough diamond. But if I could turn up the generation rate of diamond a touch and lower coal a decent amount, it may even out the game more. I would think this change could go in without messing up your current maps. It would only affect new chunks that are generated or new maps.
Hmmm, perhaps. A more flexible world generator would be great.
That was why I hinted at having more ore, though. So diamond would be found a bit more abundantly than currently, if you went looking down there, but you'd primarily find tonnes and tonnes of cobble. Maybe a TINY bit of the other resources. As such, I'd probably mine at levels where iron is more abundant instead.
And make a LOT of lava 20 down, so that getting diamonds is really challenging? :tongue.gif:
DUDE, ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?! TAT IS A GREAT IDEA! I was seriously suggesting the same thing...kind of. In my post (below) I talked about concentration of anything actually in an area. There would still be resources but concentrated. Please read and reply. Thanks and great idea.
If any new minerals are added, I'd recommend that they be found higher up. People are always saying things like "Add Kitrionikatilite (:tongue.gif:) which be a purple ore, as rare as diamond, found at the same levels as diamond, and you could make tools and armour, exactly like diamond, but purple! And they'd work faster and have the same dura- ... blah blah". I always get carried away with examples...

Example:
Diamond (0.20%, 1-10, abs)
Gold (0.35%, 1-15, abs)
Iron (0.42%, 10-50, flt)
Coal (0.50%, 15-64, abs)
