Lava Jelly: This mob floats majestically through the air, with drifting tendrils hanging below. It is a red or orange colour and provides light like lava. When it's tendrils come in contact with the player it bursts, spewing lava everywhere, and if it bursts next to another block creates a lava spring.
It would be 2 x 2 x 2 blocks in size
Not sure if it is hostile, it might not actively seek out the player but this would make it to easy to exploit I think...
If killed by player attacking it, instead of bursting it drops to the ground and deflates, not causing any damage. It will drop leather (on second thoughts, would drop flint).
Can be milked for lava using a bucket, but this might turn it hostile if it isn't already.
Not sure if this mob makes a lot of sense, but like the challenge it could represent.
The lava thing is a no. I don't want my forests to all burn down.
And it makes absolutely no sense..just seems like a generic blob thing.
I agree that the dropping the leather is a little WTF, but I wouldn't want it to drop anything new (i.e lava proof skin), and if it dropped obsidian that would be boring. Maybe if it dropped 1 or 2 flint?
It should not be too hard to stop it from burning down a forest. It glows so should be easy to see (at night at least) and if it bursts when it's tendrils only touch the player and not other mobs then burning down forests should be easy to avoid.
