First suggestion. Shields. a simple version of armor that is easy to make early on. i guess grafting would be like a sideways door. just a way to get that extra boost in armor when starting a new world.
Second idea. cherry bombs. a less powerful version of tnt, probably one sulfur, 1 sand. and would be primarily used in land mines (pressure plate above it), because it is a hassle to make 1 tnt block, just to see it go so quickly.'
third idea. a mining helmet. simple helmet design, but add some redstone (and some coal possibly...) to give your hat a small light source, not too bright, like half a torch, but something to use to identify ores and such.
fourth thought change arrows to work like weapons, (stone, iron, gold, wood, diamond variaties)
and fifth idea (might be a lot of work) a glass container with a torch in it and some coal to make a fire bottle. like tnt, without the boom, just sets things on fire. And this adds the risk to the players friends, because theres no such thing as "friendly fire"

These have all been suggested and I don't like any of them. I feel like elaborating:
Why do we need shields when we can craft armor? What's the point?
It isn't a hassle to craft TNT and, at least in my opinion, a smaller explosion is both underwhelming and pointless.
I'm not completely opposed to a mining helmet, but it's one of the first things you think of when you hear "mining", and there's obviously a reason why Notch hasn't implemented it. I imagine it would just be overpowered unless it required like 3 diamonds to make and 64 or so redstone to refill, but then everyone would whine about that...
There's a lot of problems with this. Firstly, flint would become almost completely useless. Diamond arrows would be, needless to say, ridiculously overpowered if someone has a lot of diamonds to waste... and.. I imagine iron arrows would be overpowered as well, since, usually a player that's collected a lot of **** has an abundance of iron to spend and it would need to be more powerful than flint. Also, stone/iron arrows aren't even really possible to craft irl?
If anything-I'd like to see gold arrows. They don't damage the enemy but do something special. I can't think of any good ideas.
It sounds like a molotov and I don't like it. We have flint and steel.
