I had an idea, I saw a mod similar to this in the BTW mod but it hasn't been updated. The idea: A block kind of like a dispenser that has the same 3 by 3 grid inventory that when powered places the block it has inside. Unlike a dispenser it would place blocks in order. For example it would place all blocks and square 1 before going to the next one.

Its gui would be based off of the dispenser gui but it would have a switch or "lever" on it. This switch would have 2 positions, Place, and Gather. This would allow (in combination with Pistons) for an automated miner or (in combination with Pistons) an automated wall builder that uses iron blocks instead of cobblestone. If any modder would be willing to make this I would appreciate it.
Crafting Suggestion:
I just looked it up and its similar to what I'm looking for but its not exactly what I'm looking for. I would prefer that this block or "dispenser" place objects from its inventory instead of turning items that touch into their corresponding blocks.

My idea is meant for it's variety of implementations, but I still like yours though.

If you could search for my build block does that but in a different way, as it turns any item of a block into the block itself.

This would in effect do what I'm looking for
