Alright, as the title says, I'm suggesting Notch adds a Parachute tool to the game. The parachute is a simply made usable item. To use a parachute, it would be epuipped, then a right click would be done to activate the parachute. This parachute would look something like an upside down tent(including zipper) as an icon in Inventory and in-hand. When equipped on the player, it would be a large flat surface floating 2 blocks above the player with strings coming from the player's back area connecting to the flat surface, as could be seen with F5.
The Parachute could be made as follows; Symbols mean as follows: E means Empty slot(in a crafting table), W means Wool(any color would work), and S means String.
Here is what your crafting table would look like:
W W W
S E S
E S E
So it resembles a wool-and-string parachute.
Now, technical points about the Parachute tool.
-Right click to activate
-Slows player's horizontal movement by half(As in waterspeed of movement, but in air.)
-Slows player's vertical movement by half(Once again, like waterspeed for falling movement, but in air.)
-Requires 3 string and 3 wool for creation.
-Is reusable unlimited times(might require a recharge), much like a clock, or a compass.
What does everyone think? This would allow player's to jump off cliffs and live(as I know every experienced player has done before but fallen to their doom instead of living), would introduce new "sports"(like skydiving from max height and such), activites, or even Achievements and Statistics(Achievement: Parachute 15 blocks or more down to safety!), all while staying within Minecraft's non-modern approach(it may not have been invented in medieval times, but it was fully possible.)!
Please give feedback, and if you like it, support!
nice idea, but to clear things up, parachute were invented back in the medieval ages..kinda... in the 1500's leonardo da vinci invented a parachute prototype...but noone tested it cause you's need to jump off a building (everyone knows you just respawn ) so since no-one tested it, it was forgotten, untill about 2006 when an invter/archect remade the parachute using materials from that time, but found it wouldnt work, so he improved the design (also using materials and tools from that time) and tested it by jumping off a cliff in colorado, and he survived.
sorry for the history lesson, i just cant give up a chance to prove im smarter then other people :biggrin.gif:

I think this is AS but I support partially. I think that instead of wool it should be leather, and it should be one use, as the resources are easy to obtain.

Not necessarily. I think it might be possible so that you could put it in your hot bar and you can right click to activate.
Maybe it only gives you lesser falling for a few seconds?
Maybe it gives you lesser falling speed until you touch the ground?
I am no programmer, so I have no idea if that could be done with a reasonable amount of code. (As in, not a massive wall of code for one item)
It wouldn't be to hard... a simple model change and fall speed change, and on contact with a block you would revert to the normal model. Not to hard.
