Notch once mentioned (briefly) to add a sort of ale or beer to the game. Soooo, i guess this is where I make a suggestion right? OK
First, a Barrel( or tin) must be crafted. It would be built exactly the same as a chest, but instead of using planks, raw wood is used. This Suggestion ties in with other ideas about bees and honey. Breaking a bee hive will drop honey, and honey combs. Honey will be placed in the barrel, where it will take 2+ days to properly ferment. Mugs will be crafted with glass exactly the same way with as a bowl. When you right click on the barrel with a mug it will fill with Mead. Barrels are good for about 20 drinks. When mead is drunken it restores 3 1/2 hearts. When a certain amount is drunken, the player will become "Drunk" which basically means there will be a wobbly camera and motion blur. It would be fun to get a group of players on SMP together and have mead parties.
Being drunk should also make movement speed decrease by 50% or so. I would also say that a barrel could be like a furnace, with sugar being used at the bottom slot and honey at the top, allowing you to keep barrels permanently topped up.
(This is because, in my knowledge, fermentation is best done with sugar, although I may be totally wrong.)
The honey and sugar could maybe be mixed before fermentation?
