I know I'm not very active but I do lurk a lot and see lots of hate from anti-rpg/rpg users. Minecraft IS the perfect RPG because it's a crafting game. I know not everyone bought it for that element and that's why I don't support forcing RPG game play but adding some elements of RPG (mini quests..etc) would add appeal to two different types of gamers. Which could lead to increasing the member base that would subsequently give us more experienced players in modding/servers/..etc. I think hating on ideas simply "because it's RPG like" is crippling to the furthering of this game and close minded all together.

I think RPG elements are better fit for the Upcoming Adventure Mode, I wouldn't mind seeing them there. But Survival seems to work best as is. I wouldn't be surprised if Notch tried to implement some RPG stuff into Survival, though it wouldn't work and began working on Adventure mode because of it.

As a forum critic, I often encourage everyone to remain open minded about various topics.
This is a psychological paradox.
People are creatures of habit ergo they fear change.
Adaptation is required for the continued survival of the species ergo people must change.
People must face their fears or they are going to die.
The problem isn't even found here; however. The problem is that too many unqualified people are given too strong of a voice. I don't want to hear why a game would be unbalancing from someone that can't even do 2 variable mathematic equations. I don't want to hear about artistic design from someone who's crowning achievement was paste and macaroni noodles. I don't want to hear about a game being hard from someone whom hasn't beaten the original Castlevania for the NES.
I have standards, and while things are in my standards, I'll remain open minded. Hell, I'll remain open minded even if these things fall outside of my standards.
If you don't have a solid grasp on WTF you're talking about, you don't need to have a voice. I don't need to hear the vices of alcohol from someone whom doesn't have near the experience to even have alcohol pass his lips. In the same token, I would relish the vices from a 15 year old who performed vehicular manslaughter while under the influence.
Perhaps the illustration is a bit rough, but it is conjecture.
I've seen so many good suggestions simply get washed down the shitter because a single element was off for these uncompromising elitist perfectionists.
No idea is perfect, no idea will ever be perfect; I can point out flaws with any thing you throw at me, including things already released. This doesn't make an idea bad; good luck convincing these elitists of such things.
I have actually (no joke) seen people LOOK for reasons to not like a suggestions. Like they say they WANT to accept something but they can't because they HAVE to find that one tiny but glaring flaw in the suggestion that sends it straight to Hell.
What's the cure?
There is no cure. Ignorance is ignorance, a virus borne from the primal wants and demands of people. The only thing one can do is educate; and even then, only the redeemable would give a listen. Everyone else would feel, as they are elitist and perfect, there is nothing you can teach them that they do not already know.
On a personal note:
Patience is a virtue, but a trying one. Though I try, I am an imperfect creature; prone to fits of hostility and impatient crude remarks when my often generous portioning of patience has worn thin. When I even think that I've dropped from a point of wisdom to a point of outright barbarity, I back off and begin lurking.
I suggest others do the same; especially those whom do not have nearly as much patience as myself. Often enough, the best way to win a fruitless argument is to walk away from it. There's no point in winning if you've salted your own turf; I try to be even handed and mediate discourse equally and without prejudice. Many disagree with this statement, I urge them to pull back from the seat long enough to let the rage lift from their fingers so they don't go shoving their foot into their mouth when I am forced to serve them their own ass with all of the trimmings.
I've seen so many otherwise good suggestions get side-tracked by petty arguments. Listen dumb asses; neither of you are going to win. If you must argue, please do so out of public sight. Private messages are created for a reason. A friend/foe list is created for a reason. Get your stupid bickering off of the forums. All bitching back and forth encourages is everyone else thinking you a jerk/moron/flamer/troll.

How do you counter negativity? You can't. Educate as best you can. But when that fails and the faux air of civility across an unreceptive troglodyte's face vanishes. Do not let them drag you into a fight. END IT by ignoring them. Let them be the one to get banned. Let them be the one to light the fires. They'll go down, make sure they're not taking you with them (this is what they want).
