I love that spiders can climb walls, it adds an extra level of difficulty and 'omg'-ness to the game. I have some ideas on how to improve current mobs.
*Improved pathfinding. I think of creepers, skeletons, and spiders as 'intelligent'. I think these mobs should be able to determine if it is possible to say, skirt your wall, climb the mountain a bit next to your wall, fall onto the wall and survive, and drop to the ground to attack you. Basically, if there is any way to get to you without dying, they should consider it.
*Creeper Difficulty. I think creepers should have the ability to 'settle' on destroying some of your creations if they can't get to you. Basically, any block placed by you could be targetable in the event a creeper knows you are near but can't get to you. This could allow a group of creepers to try to blow a hole in your wall to allow their brothers through. This would make outer-defenses necessary, maybe even 2 lines of defenses at night. You might be forced to occasionally repair your wall(depending on what it is made out of). Kind of a zombie-seige type feature.
*Zombie Health. Zombies should be harder to kill. After all, they don't really ever 're-die' in most films/stories/etc... you can chop their head off but they still look at you. Zombies should be all but impossible to kill without a sword, at least.
*Skeletons/Arrows. You shouldn't be able to harm skeletons(very much at least) with arrows...
You fail for saying Hardcore Mode. There is one, it is called Hard. But that aside I wouldn't mind better pathfinding, as I secure my house from all sides anyways. But most of the other stuff is definitely for Hard mode. It would suck to have to rebuild EVERY time a Creeper stumbled near some of your stuff.

I was actually suggesting a new difficulty. Real hardcore mode with map reset upon death. I would play that mode about 90% of the time. It just makes it more, important, to be careful if you know the game will delete your save, compared to telling yourself you will delete your save. But thanks for the fail... I think I'm up to 5 now :wink.gif:
And as for rebuilding, creepers wouldn't just randomly blow up your stuff, if you established a secure perimeter of some sort. Maybe 1 creeper explosion could destroy 4 planks, or 1 cobble, or *rarely* 1 obsidian. There would be an element of rebuilding, but wouldn't that make the survival aspect stick around longer? Right now, if you build a wall and stay in it, you can't get hurt by mobs.
I'm actually really for this idea. For hard mode only, of course, but good idea!
It would be exciting to be attacked by mobs of enemies who use tactics to get to you! /badjoke
It would need some balancing, but I could see it being done.
The big problem for me is, on most of my maps, it goes from survival for the first few days, to creative once I have a perimeter set up. And... I don't like *not* building a perimeter, so I can't really 'fix' that myself.
You could probably still hide underground forever and ever... but if you're the type that builds a house with a wall, or a small town with a wall... could be interesting.

I was imagining a giant house or tower (which I often build) being bombed by those damned creep waves, followed by other mobs charging in. In any event, I relate to the survival to creative shift. Once you're safe you just start amassing **** so you can make more stuff. (Which is super fun.)
I was thinking that maybe they would only attack your house/wall/perimeter if they see you go into it.

I hope you know I was kidding about the fail part (although you Hardcore modes like this being asked for EVERY game now so it gets a little tired). But you mean like Old School Diablo 2 Hard. No forgiveness, you die and you are done. You don't mean monitor your status bars and refurbish your gear every 15 steps like Fallout NV. I would say keep damage the same as whatever mode you are playing on though (Normal Hardcore or Hard Hardcore, because Peaceful Hardcore is oxymoronic).
But I see you mean like if they see you, and you run through your door and close it they will run to the door, try to get in, and then say "Screw it." and blow away your front porch right? That I could see, I would specifically make little hideaway dens that go just deep enough to shelter me from the blast so the don't go after my main house.
Liking more now. It would be awesome to do on MP, provided no one is a griefing little A-hole. Play with people you know.

I wasn't sure, but I'm keeping the fail anyway :smile.gif:
Yeah, that's pretty much what I mean. Even if they didn't see you but found something you made, they might just spite-splode anyway... I would love to have to protect everything of mine in new ways. You could always build on top of mountains that creepers can't get up, or use ditches/lava moats/etc...
I would like to see better creeper behavior such as blowing through a player creation; but this would require additional data for the game to flag if a block is player placed or not. Really, it's only a boolean flag(1 bit) per block, but when you're talking 32768 blocks per chunk(or 32KB), this can add up quick. Due to the coding overhaul required for this, I'll have to go with a grudging no.
Zombies definitely need to be better, but I suggest a hive mentality as opposed to simply "not dying".
Finally, skeletons vs arrows; I prefer to get up close and personal with skeletons anyway, but this could be disastrous on SMP where player aim lags and skeleton aim is laser accurate. May be easier to say "screw it" and pull out the bow and arrow and fire away instead. This would confuse a lot of current players or players whom have gone away for a while and come back. I doubt it would be difficult to implement; but it would be a relearning sink.
I will say, defending a typical house is easy how it is currently: <Extra lip to prevent spiders from getting on the roof
[] [] [] <Alternate between a hole and a solid piece so you can hit spiders
[] [] [] []
[] [] [] [] <Stairs to spider killing level
[] [] [] <Creeper's Head
[] [] <same 1x1 anti spider holes, your face is even with enemy legs ( ). Easy kills [] []
Congratulations, you are now invincible.

I think most of the mobs should have intelligent path finding (staying the heck away from tall ledges, fire, and molten rock), and some form of learning (like cows running away from you because you hit them in an attempt to get them out of your house or creepers learning cacti are the worst things for them to try to hug). Creepers and wolves strike me as fairly intelligent, with skeletons and spiders following closly behind. Pigs aren't that bad either.
As for creepers banding together, I say this: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone: :cobblestone::stone::obsidian::stone::cobblestone:
*Creeper goes in line stalking eachother*
Steve: OH NO!!! *Runs in house*
*A Creeper blows up the front door, then teh other creepers close in on him*
Creeper: Heh heh....

These could be toggle-able in a hard-core mode...
except a few could be in normal.
