NO. If you die, you should lose all your items. If you don't like it, store the stuff in a chest. Maybe you shouldn't lose them in peaceful or something.

I don't like this idea, it'd subtract from the challenge of survival, and take away a lot of the reason behind a life gauge. What would be the point of dying then aside from the slight possibility of losing your mining spot?
No, no saving any items at all. The point is to take what you need, store when you can, and actually go back to your base or place of storage when you need to, or drop a new chest and mark it with a pillar.
The point is to make dying matter and not be easy transport so even on peaceful this is a no no: "Need to move stuff quick? Switch to peaceful, jump off cliff, at spawn point." Hell no.

I don't think he meant that you can never get them back..

The reason you lose your items is so you cant just kill yourself for easy transports. Oh jeez.
Maybe you could craft something that you could put on ONE thing in your inv.
