Just fyi, when I searched for slimeballs suggestion there were quite a few results so I didn't read them all.
Personally, I feel slime should be a utilitarian substance. The basis of my suggestion is that slime should be a fuel for soaking items in a furnace. (My reason for using furnaces) If the substance is to have many uses, it should not have a large number of confusing crafting equations. (My Excuse) Slime takes time to seep in. Slime is also relatively elusive in its effects.
Here are some example ideas. I don't mean for all of these to get implemented.
Wood -> Slippery Wood
This wood should act sorta like ice currently does.
Cooked Fish -> Battered Fish
More hearts, not really sure about this one.
Sand -> Quick Sand
A replacement for soul sand
Coal -> Tar
Slows down movement. Repetitive if quick sand is added but could have different properties.
Cobblestone -> Mossy Cobblestone
Could be nice.
Wool -> Trampoline
Popular suggestion. Saw quite a few of these.
Yellow Wool -> Sponge
I'm not really sure sponges deserve implementation into non-classic
Dirt -> Clay
I want more clay!!!
Sapling -> Special Sprout
The tree's leaves should drop something like scent seeds.

Sponges really need to come back to minecraft.
I like the idea of slimes to power lanterns, like oil for resupply.
Slime could be used to make things unsafe like a trap. Making slippery wood could be interesting.
This should be looked over by Notch.
