The last post on this kind of idea was in March, but while I liked it, there was one other note I was interested in. Please discuss the topic rationally: one-liners aren't particularly useful, either for progressing or in shutting down particular ideas.
The idea of natural disasters is fairly widespread, but many people have expressed (very valid) concerns about these mega-events destroying hard-earned work. Recently, I stumbled onto a topic about meteors: something I personally find attractive, but brings up the previous point. It happened to click, though, with my stumbling onto one of those annoying patches of decapitated surface caves.
You know what I mean, those huge patches of bare stone and dirt in hillsides and such.
These aren't altogether common, but they're not useful either. They're just glitches. But why not expand those a little bit? Make them a part of the game, rather than just annoying glitches? Hence the suggestion: prepackaged disaster zones.
The idea is that rather than have natural disasters appear and wreck your work, have certain chunks generate as the "ravaged" biome. One example that I posted in the topic "HOW TO SOLVE THE LIMITED MINERALS PROBLEM" (paraphrased, sorry) was to have meteor craters spawn naturally in the form of huge basins, mostly of bare stone and gravel. In the center would be an obsidian meteor, with a center of valuable ore. Surface lava might accompany the meteor.
Imagine walking upon one of these colossal ruins. Aesthetically, they might not be too pleasing-- but neither are surface caves and (for many), deserts. For many players, the bumpy landscape would pose a fun challenge and roleplay element, a dynamic display of natural power without endangering the player's work.
Other suggestions? Consider tornadoes or hurricanes, also problematic because of the damage they wreak. Tornado-ravaged biomes might have trees deformed and sand, gravel, and dirt strewn at random across the landscape. Hurricanes might have large, shallow surface lakes and the same destruction of trees.
I'll stop here for now, but any concrit is quite welcome. Thanks for readin'!
I think if this was done right, it would be a cool feature. That's if it was only done right though.
I think this applies to most suggestions. :tongue.gif:

By surface caves, you you mean the edgelands? Those are supposed to be that way. But nice suggeste dfix all the same
Nope! I do love the Edgelands though! I'll see if I can find a seed to demonstrate what I mean, but in the meantime: have you ever wandered around and randomly found holes in the ground with stone showing? Think that, but on a much larger scale. On seeds I play, I frequently find large patches of exposed stone outcroppings (something that's actually natural, but the way it occurs in-game is actually rather hideous).
Or search a beta thread: I think it was called "SCARRED LAND?"

Pics? It could just be natural. Or a chunk error. Depends on the pics you give
Sorry about the interval: I had a bad run of luck with seeds and while watching Coe's quest, found a perfect demonstration of what I was talking about. The stone formation encountered at 7:30 is what I mean by open stone terrain-- and believe me, it happens in Beta (just not on my recent seeds, curse it...)
