I'm sure someone has thought of this before, but, why not alligators for inland lakes and rivers? I've actually been working on the picture for it, but it's not 100% yet. I was planning on making a mod that would have them in it, but, i'm still in the middle of figuring out how to do it. (Java is NOT my forte).
So, for my suggestion, in any water, be that lake, or river, that meets the following conditions, alligators will spawn in it:
1. Must be atleast 2 blocks deep, but no more then 7.
2. Must have land in all four cardinal directions, within 25 blocks. This makes sure it is a landlocked body of water. No ocean spawning! :biggrin.gif:
Alligator specs:
Can not spawn if more then 3 alligators are within 30 blocks.
No lighting specifications, but, i was going to make an albino alligator for caves, that only spawn in caves.
As long as there is dry land no more than 1 block above the water block, the alligator can leave the water, but only to chase you, and other mobs. They are slightly faster then you, but have distinct sounds while swimming, so you know they are there.
They will not chase you for more then 10 blocks, or two blocks up in elevation.
They can not hurt you while in a boat.
When killed, they drop Alligator skin, which can be used like cowhide, but slightly stronger.
When killed, they drop 3 Alligator Teeth, which can be used in place of flint, only while making arrows. They are as strong.
At night, they are 90% transparent, till they leave the water. This way, it simulates the fact that they are mostly underwater at all times.
They swim much faster then you.

This was the rough draft of the alligator i threw together for this.
Mainly when they launch themselves from the water, and snap onto your face. I was considering adding a launch attack like when the spiders launch at you, but not sure if that would work from the water; to my suggestion. I'm not 100% sure of what the limitations of the game are.
However, i did want to add, that the alligators can breathe underwater, and on land.

Basically the same thing as regular, but, with new spawn conditions:
1. Must have some sort of dry land in all six directions, within 30 blocks.
2. Same light conditions as zombies.
3. Any water. No deepness requirement. Otherwise, they would never appear.
They drop White Alligator skin, and 3 teeth.
However, i did want to add, that the alligators can breathe underwater, and on land.
