Gold already has uses. You can do most of this without gold. Stop being lazy. Compact redstone = WAAAAAAY OP. Redstone is supposed to be sloppy and noncompact.
I'm not sure I follow you all the way... What exactly would be the major benefits of using a gold ingot to make redstone circuits more "compact"?
Originally, one would boost an RS signal by using 2 NOT Gates -- a double inverter.
Notch implemented a Redstone Repeater to do the same thing in 1 block.
Its the same idea: RS and Gold can be crafted into Integrated Circuits, or "Chips."
Chips can be crafted in certain positions to make different RS elements. Instead of having a 6x6 space for a Memory Location, you can (according to my idea) craft 2 chips together to make a Memory Location Block. These blocks are 1x1x1 so they take up much less space when used en masse for a circuit. The only caveat is that only those with abundant gold can afford to make the neat compact circuits.

I never said it didn't have uses. Also, the entire redstone system can be done without any chips such as this idea.

If there ever was a remote possibility that I would open Minecraft and see rocket ships and lightsabers, I'd much sooner take up alcoholism.

Search. It was everyone else's idea first, and it sucked every time.
That would actually be pretty neat. It should have a menu that pops up when you right click on the block, to rearrange the circuits within it. I think that might be pretty cool.

Redstone is extremely messy and not at all compact.
Perhaps we could mace Integrated Circuits with Gold and Redstone, to make RS circuits more compact and give gold a new and practical use.

Those are examples. Obviously not every logic gate will have an IC, but I'm sure you get the gist.
