The elevator block is exactly what it sounds like: an elevator.
What it looks like:
The elevator block would be a cubic, opaque block the same color as a stone block, only with a black rim around it.
How it works:
The block can be activated by any form of electricity, be it switches, buttons, redstone wire, etc. But possibly a button would be the best method for activation. The reason for this is that the elevator block wouldn't need continuous power to run, only a short burst of electricity would activate the block to move. The elevator would then continue moving in the desired direction until it becomes adjacent to a certain block, which, until a better name is created, will just be called the "contact block". This is another cubic, opaque block the same color as sand, only with the same black rim as the elevator block. As soon as the elevator block becomes adjacent to a contact block, the elevator remains in that place until further activation, which would make the block return back to its previous spot.
How to craft:
on the 3X3 crafting grid, the elevator block would crafted like this:
Elevator block:
R= redstone, O=obsidian, S=stone
[] S []
[] O []
[] R []
Contact block:
R=redstone, O=obsidian, s=sand
[] s []
[] O []
[] R []
Technicalities:
The Elevator block can:
-have minecarts and minecart rails put on top of it
-have torches placed on it
-be placed adjacently with other elevator blocks to make a larger elevator
-be activated by having a pressure plate placed on top of it
-be activated without having the player standing on it
The Elevator block cannot:
-have monsters spawn on it, regardless of any lighting conditions
-have another cubic block placed directly on top of it
-move in any direction other than up or down
-be broken while in use
-be broken with any tool other than an iron pickaxe or better
Possible uses:
Much more efficient than stairs
Much faster to use than ladders
Greatly reduces commute of minecart trails that go underground
