Right now, surviving the night in Minecraft CAN be challenging. We have a lot of ground mobs that can make your life VERY difficult if you don't have torches and a shelter.
However, you can easily break the entire survival aspect of the game by digging up about 15 wads of dirt, stacking yourself on top of them in a 1x1 tower...And you can survive the night with no torches, no (real) digging, and no need to take shelter...At all.
If a flying night-time mob was introduced, it would solve the problem of just being able to elevate yourself to survive. The mob would only attack you if you were exposed in the air, and would be repelled by significant sources of light (Not just 1 torch...). It would move you slightly when it attacked, knocking you off of any single elevated surface. Since there is a possibility (If not inevitability) of fall damage, the mob would not deal very much damage.
This mob would solve the "cheap" survivability problem at night in Minecraft. I also think it would present Notch with an opportunity to introduce a new drop from a very eerie, scary mob. Imagine a flying wraith, or banshee. A giant hawk-creature that blends in with the night sky. Or maybe a dark, sinister shrieking wraith with ghostly wings and glowing eyes!
...My point stands. Minecraft needs a flying night-time mob to enforce the idea of "Get into cover at night".
THough I like the idea and the reasons, you need to suggest the mob iself, not just a mob. Add a mob, stats and a drop THEN we'll all like it more.
Well, it's not like I have a concept I can share. I drew a few sketches once, but I'm definitely not a pixel artist, and I don't have a scanner.
I outlined it, basically. Some kind of shadowey figure that does low damage and knocks you back, but only attacks if you're elevated and exposed. I guess it'd have to be easier to kill, too. 1 Hit with a diamond sword, like 2-3 with the rest, since it'd be fast and probably harder to hit.
As for a drop...I dunno what Notch's plans are for new items, but it could easily drop something that helped out with a new item set, or was part of a new item set. Some crafting element or something.
Just an eagle that eats humans.
I've already been scared by caves.
I kinda had an idea that if its eyes glowed (The wraith mob thing), that maybe it lurked in caves during the day, looking out at you. Imagine walking up to a cave and suddenly seeing glowing eyes open at you =D.
Already suggested. I'd suggest you check the harpies thread if you support this, it seems to be doing pretty well and already has some nice mockups. :smile.gif:
Erm, this is supposed to be out at night, so I don't see why people think a hawk would be a good idea. I'd prefer something more like... I dunno, a bat, I guess. They would spawn about as often as chickens, I'd imagine, and in small groups of two or three. Attack on sight, only do about .5 (or maybe one heart, I dunno) damage but are fast. Have about... five hearts, three hearts each? And they would become neutral during the day, and actively seek lower light levels. If one is hostile, other bats would be attracted to it and probably find it and attack you as well. They will become agressive if another nearby bat becomes hostile as well. During the day they will hang on the ceilings of caves.
...yeah okay that's just my take on it, no need to pay any attention to me.

Only on the first night though.

Why do this?! It's not like finding coal is hard!

Yuck...Harpies? I always hated those creatures in mythology.
Anyways, I realize this isn't an original idea by any means, but I really feel Minecraft needs it. That's why I didn't throw about specifics of ONE type of mob or something. This thread is for the general agreement that there needs to be a flying, night-time mob in Minecraft.

And at night...They rest in trees =D
Words of wisdom, my friend. Agreed.

Or just have it kill you off mountains and stuff.
