I understand why having different weapons with different stats wouldn't work, it would be pointless and, essentially, un-Minecraft. I propose an option that allows the player to choose a different skin for the weapon when they craft it.
For example: I make a sword, however I choose it to look like a battle-axe when I hold it and have a battle-axe skin in my inventory. It has the exact same properties as a sword (damage, crafting requirements, range, etc) but it just looks like a battle-axe for my own enjoyment.
Basically, just different weapon skins to add a aesthetic diversity.
