After some hours of survival multiplayer and singleplayer, Minecraft isn't really that challenging any more. After your first house is up and you have some porkchops in your chest you are set to start digging. Most experienced players will by day 2 or 3 start getting their hands on iron armor, and the game is even easier. And the the "survival" begins.
My idea is this:
To survive you must eat and drink at a regular base to stay alive.
(Probably already suggested)
Therefore the first challenge:
Split water into freshwater and saltwater.
This means that players must find a freshwater source. These sources will be located inland, underground lakes and rivers.
To carry drinking water around, players can craft a small leather water bottle using leather. This bottle can be filled up at freshwater sources, so you can carry it around in your inventory and take a sip whenever you need it.
Players can also drink milk straight from the cow, but will not be as effective as water.
To eat on a regular basis is a non-brainer.. Just eat when you are hungry. The challenge here is to get enough food, therefore 2-3 porkchops in a chest as health backup is not enough anymore! A good steady source of food is needed, like farming wheat, hunting pigs and fishing. (cake and cookies for ya sweet tooth!)
How thirsty and hungry you are, will be indicated by a hunger and thirst bar. When these drop you will need to take action to fill them up by ether drinking freshwater/milk or eating food. These bars will drop both over time and when the player is active. For example: the thirst-bar will drop faster when mining, fighting or doing other hard work, but slower when inactive or or just slacking around. Water is therefor more important then food. You must also drink more if you are in a desert biome.
If the thirst-bar or the hunger-bar goes down to 0, players will start to slow down. movement speed will be reduced, and if not replenished the player will slowly start to lose HP, and in the end you will die from hunger or thirst.
To replenish HP, a player must first have a full hunger bar before eating affects HP. so get that belly full before the hearts!
This idea is meant to work under a certain difficulty or setting, so players can choose to use it or not.
Other ideas[/b
Item idea]Grappling hook
The idea is that a player can use sting to craft rope and iron to craft a hook, then combine the rope and hook them to make the grappling hook. The grappling hook can then be tossed and the player can use the rope to climb up. My idea here is that players could toss the hook about 5 blocks in any direction and then climb up just like a ladder. This will make scaling mountains with high cliffs much easier. Another idea is that players could use the grappling hook to swing over holes.
Lasso
The lasso will be made out of first a loop of rope and then rope. Combine them to make a lasso.
The lasso can be useful to capture animals, players and mobs by throwing the lasso on them. The player can then pull the mob/animal/player towards them.
That concludes my ideas for now. If you have any other ideas/meanings/comments on any of them please post a reply.
The grappling hook has been suggested, and I assume the lasso although I haven't heard of it. They are both nice ideas although there are no rope-like things in minecraft yet, so it would definatly be in a bigger update.

Just shows that I have not done enough research..
What about the grappling hook and the lasso then?
