A suggestion; why not use some and redstone together to make a flashlight or a headgear light so we can see in the dark instead of always planting torches.

I've always wanted a lighted helmet, but what you will get is a lot of people complaining it isn't possible, when, it actually is, because it's been done by a modder, and if a modder can do it, Notch can certainly do it.
Perhaps make it not protect you as much? So it's more balanced, and it needs coal to run. So once it goes out, you craft it with like a few bits of coal. Inefficient but you get portable light. Or we could use glowstone.
Mock up crafting for a flash light.. = Lightstone - redstone dust

It's been suggested many times, and never with regards to the fact that it would require a complete rewrite of the lighting engine (said by Notch himself).
At best, you would be able to simulate it by having the game plant fake torches at your feet: but not well. Suggestions should keep in mind the amount of rewriting that would have to occur before being posted.

It's been done in a mod, therefor it wouldn't need much effort by Notch if a modder did it. I'm quite sir. Maybe he's planning it already, who knows!

Incorporating a mod takes much more than you think it does, because mods often only have the concern of getting one thing working: just one. The solution I posted would technically work, albeit it would look stuttery and probably give people a headache.
However, Notch does not have that luxury. The code introduced must be consistent with the rest of the game, as well as being compatible with future features. Ever noticed how mods break each other often? That's because they're all making what amount to hacks to the same files. These hacks sometimes introduce entirely new hosts of bugs, interact with each other poorly-- and make the code a mess.
From my experience, you don't want to introduce anything that is a half-fix while you're still adding content. It means a world of hurt later.

The way I solved this was by downloading "Plaster Craft". It is an attachment to Minecraft that allows you to make glowticks and nightvision goggles. The goggles help with seeing in the dark inredibly. i highly recommend it. :biggrin.gif:

Maybe someday then. Could be a surprise.
