A lot of people have wanted a repair system, yet the balancing of it comes in to question.
My idea is fairly simple. When a shovel, pick etc is used, the items that determine it's durability (cobblestone, iron, and such) will take the damage, and that damage is averaged to determine the durability of the tool. This can allow for a perfectly balanced way to un-craft an item, re-craft it as something else, use THAT item, and then craft it back into the original item. The cobblestone/iron/etc, would have durability bars just like the tools would.

Ummm... i've never heard dismantling as an adjective... so I don't know what you mean.
A thread suggesting breaking down items (uncrafting) said almost exactly what you did.
