ive noticed that we only have 2 items that combined fully crafted items together as of right now, and thats the two minecarts, i was thinking of a few ideas for progressive items and watned to see what others thought. this actually fits along with the ideas X put forth but let me give you some of the ideas i had first would be a cross bow, this would be a 3 step item let me show you the basic start.

this would equal the "cross bow stock" which in the next formula will be represented with
the second part would be

which would become "unstrung crossbow" and in the finale fomaula lets represent this with the and string with
so the finale part would be

and that creates the full crossbow leading to a far stronger ranged weapon. another one i had was a round shield but it would require "corners" to make it round and this is easier explained, you need to make 4 corners, you make 1 corner by putting 3 basic planks into the corner and two near blocks (so like top center top left corner and middle left blocks) do this 4 times, then put these corners in the 4 corners of the craft bench with 5 planks in the other spot, and make a shield. then you could "plate" the shield in a metal or diamond by putting it in the center and putting 4 of the material around it (same way you make a clock or compass) and finally maybe if your looking to perminatly hold it, my finale idea would be to put it with a chest piece, like put the armor in teh center and put the shield in the slot to the left of the armor, this way you can go into caves holding a sword in your main hand and a shield in your unused hand.
i had a few other ideas off the top of my head but i cant remember all of them, so for now ill j ust see what you guys think of these, and maybe see other ideas you guys have for "progressive items"

Yes, I agree. As X said, Minecraft needs more progression.
I don't think thats what X meant by more progression. X meant progression more like " Fighting spiders is hard without a bow. To make a bow you need string. You get string from spiders. You need to kill a spider the hard way first, then It gets easier"
But anyways, I think this is a good idea. not really the actual crossbow, but the idea of progressive items like that.
I only like progressive items if each base item has a purpose of its own. Items that are crafted should always have some function besides just being used as a component to craft another item.
Exceptions to this are conversions/refinemets (like sugarcane to sugar/paper or dye components to dyes) or items that are being "used" as part of the crafting process (like crafting bowls to allow the creation of mushroom soup, the bowl is used to contain the mushroom soup, rather than being an integrated part of the whole item being crafted)
also, you forget that you can craft the bow with cobblestone and redstone to make a dispenser.

well X was sayign the game needed more progression in the adventure department yes, but i don't think X ment it only needed pogressive aspects in adventure, just that its the aspect that needed more work, but i don't think X would argue with progression in item construction hell the idea of the "dark spider string" being able to make a stronger bow could work as maybe you need THAT kind of string to make the crossbow work peroid

I do not like this idea, if you are going to add multiple parts to the game they should each have their own use or at least be able to craft more than 1 item. Progressive recipes = Less chance of people exploring and finding out things like this on their own rather than looking at the wiki which is no fun.
well my ideas are not exactly the best and yeah i realize the wiki risk to it all though i do not like to admit it, but the point is the game needs progressive things both in its adventuring aspects as much as its crafting aspects

Also, you should check out Extended 2x2 crafting for good shields as well as "progressive" items that use other functional items as part of their recipes
As for Crossbows, you should check out Rangecraft
