It may be fairly pointless when you first think about it, but Lightning can strike areas causing fire (At least I'm fairly sure) - and it might just strike someone's wooden house. Also to add; the Pig & Zombie Pigmen effect, and some people might not want this mob in they're overworld. So, why not add a Lightning rod to attract any lightning strikes - once struck, it will begin to glow for a few seconds and can cause damage to players & mobs that touch it in that short time. Personally I think it could be made like this:

What are your thoughts about it? And if it's already been suggested, please post so.
lightning would start forest fires, they are VERY hard to stop.later on trees would be hard to find, its just a thing to make it harder to start off. plus where will the lightning go when it hits the rod?think about your sugestion a bit.
and there IS lightning,it just wont hit the ground.

(i like how you are thinking out side the box)
I was originally thinking it could create some form of specific fuel, maybe crafting a battery you could charge inside Lightning rods. Then I noticed you couldn't use it in anything. What if it could give off some form of Redstone output?

Rain puts out fire so this would not be a problem.
