I've been thinking about idea's for weather and I recalled an effect of lightning on trees in reality. In reality trees with sap in them can explode when struck by lightning due to an instant vaporization of the sap, which creates steam, and the bark explodes off the tree.
This could be done by having sap inside the trees. To aquire the sap you would need a thin iron tube to get the sap (I don't know the actual name of the tool). It would be crafted like this:
[] [] []
[] []
[] []
When you to right-click on a tree with the tube equipped, there is a chance (same as cows when it comes to milk) that syrup will begin to flow out. This would appear as a dark brown liquid flowing out of the tube onto the ground. This is not a fluid, but simply an effect. You would then have to get a bucket and collect the syrup. Right-clicking with a bucket of syrup will result in the bucket emptying and the syrup is gone. Sap would respawn in the tree within about one minecraft week.
Syrup would need a use right? So then why not be able to craft pancakes? They would be crafted like so:
= bucket of syrup = wheat = egg = bucket of milk
[] [] = Pancakes x4
[] []
Each pancake would heal 1 heart of heath. The buckets would drop when crafting is done.
To be more specific about the trees exploding, when lightning would hit the top of a tree, or hit a grass block that is directly above or 2 spaces directly above the top block. The tree (if it had sap in it) would then explode. Each log would explode with the power of a creeper at once.
Any thoughts? Explain why you dislike it if you do.
Such as durability, frequency of appearance (is it in all trees? No trees? Last I checked, birch sap didn't taste so good...), whether or not it would be once per tree or once per log, if it could be done from multiple sides...

Durability - I don't see much reason to keep it from being infinite, but if that seems overpowered than perhaps 32.
Frequency - I stated that it would be as frequent in trees as milk is to cows. As for which tree... all except birch if the current way the trees are coded allows this. I mention the code, because the difference in the tree types in loos, and spawn location, no crafting difference/saplings.

You may want to flesh out a bit more about collection-- and don't forget, sap-filled trees blow up if it's too cold!
What more detail are you looking for when it comes to collecting?
Because?

Sides? - Only the sides... not top or bottom.
