As I look at my growing pile of gold ingots with a clock in my inventory and no apples to be found I wondered what else it could be potentially be used for that's not in the game currently.
An idea popped into my head, circuit boards. Gold is commonly used it electronics as we all know and currently, doing complex circuits in minecraft requires a lot of space and resources.
A mix of sand or glass (some form of silica, dirt would be interesting), redstone and gold on the crafting table would create a circuit board. Perhaps like this:
(red shroom = redstone dust)
The circuit board could be a repeater sized block, half block or full. When placed, the input always faces the player. On right click, cycles through the various commonly used circuit designs detailed here on the wiki.
Or as an alternative to the original idea, right click opens an interface where you can custom configure the circuitry with multiple inputs, outputs (4 combined inputs/outputs), and delays on a 16x16 (more or less) inventory like menu with available components listed to the sides or top (or both) to drag and drop. Circuit board configuration components never run out.
Circuit boards can be placed on any solid block of course, also either inline with each other or in parallel.
I did to a quick search to see if this idea already existed, only found this thread here on the forums that was close. If there are more, please link them.
I usually don't do anything extravagant with redstone but after seeing some of the huge projects people have done, both in scale and complexity, I think a craftable item like this would help scale down the overall size and make further use of a resource. If dirt were used for the silica component in the recipe, that would give it a use other than backfill or getting tossed in a lake.
**edit** just after posting this, i spot another idea for circuit boards. shouda searched a little more. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=89489
