1) Make rails create a "scaffold" under it when you attach it to a side with no surface, and allow you to walk up slanted rails like they were slopes. Currently, you must place a block under it, and you have to climb those blocks by jumping each time.
2) Make a second rail item, called Supported Rail, that requires sticks and rails, that allows you to place rails above ground for one block but doesn't allow you to walk on them, only minecarts. Works for making minecart bridges into bases where you do not want the mobs to use the route as a bridge. The requirements to place these is that it can only handle up to 5 blocks away before needing to use a block as a support.
So:
They will fall and pass through these Supported Rails. Obviously, the second rail type will differ in design and looks.

I want making rails to be a bit easier since it's a hassle breaking your back to lay 15 blocks of rails.
