Notch said that the world generator is a seeded algorithm based on 3d perlin noise. He said that the horizontal plane was stretched out at a different frequency to the vertical in order to get "short" mountains against "larger" plains.
Well I'd like those plains and mountains to be a lot larger. I'd like to be able to run up a long slow hill from here to the horizon then down the other side.
Deserts would stretch for miles not metres, and oceans would be vast unswimmable tracts. I've seen requests for massive grasslands or oceans or forests - it and it seems possible with the current engine code with just a little bit of tweaking. And all you would have to do in the world seed is to stretch out the horizontal plane of it some factor. A tick box on the "new world" screen next to the seed value would allow you to select "massive terrain" option which would basically run the same seed with stretched horizontal plane.
Mines would stretch out, seams of ore would too (they might go on twice as far) but of course there would be significantly more land to cover in order to hit giant seams so that balances out effort for reward.
I'd try this myself but I haven't been able to work through the obfucation (I'm not that good with Java).

Yes, I considered this a lot too. Every biome is all crammed up next to each other and it doesn't feel right... I WOULD like to see Mountains worthy enough to scale, plains wide enough to settle on, forests grand enough to get lost in! I do hope Notch thinks this too...

random seeds spawn me on sand like, 85% of the time...if it gets to where I can't find trees at all, there goes my first night in minecraft
there's a seeds subforum, try those for places to start. There's also www.minecraftseeds.info for pictures and videos of all the cool places to start out.
I almost never spawn in the desert. Must be random.

random seeds spawn me on sand like, 85% of the time...if it gets to where I can't find trees at all, there goes my first night in minecraft
Isn't it 100% of the time? I think the current algorithm only chooses sand blocks (and snow-covered sand blocks) as the spawn point. It should be made to include grassy dirt (always found on the surface, just like sand.)
(I'd like to be able to spawn in the middle of a forest biome instead of just on a beach bordering one.)

Yes, I would agree, given unlike the poster two above, I always get out of my nice plains far too quickly!
