This has been suggested, but the rest say you can choose mobs which means all creepers.
It would be awesome if there was mob vs. human combat. You could play as mobs and fight humans. If you ask; "HAO DO U SPWN IN DAY OMFG" then read on!
You connect using IP. However, it brings you into a lobby. In the lobby there would be 8 player slots. 4 people could be the mobs and 4 players could be the humans. When the start button is clicked by the host (with at least 1 mob and 1 human!) the game would start. If the mob slots weren't filled, there would be NPC mobs either way. F3 IS DISABLED!
The Humans
Our friends the Homo Sapiens. You would play like normal SMP; punching down trees, mining underground, but here's the catch; mobs are capable of using their minds now. They have one purpose; hunt you down and kill you. In Versus mode, you have 1 life. Use that life wisely. Mobs have respawns. You do not. For this reason, it is a good idea to team up with another player, or risk death.
The Mob
Everyone loves getting their house blown up by a creeper. Well, actually they don't... anyway, let's get started.
You would have a random chance of getting a mob: 25% to get any monster but 24% for creepers, but only NPC slimes will spawn. If you wonder how you will spawn at the beginning, you will spawn in a cave or dungeon that is above ground and within 24 blocks of a character (opposite of the single player spawn algorithms, where they spawn within 24 blocks of you). The roles:
The Creeper
As a creeper, it is your duty to wreak havoc upon the humans, destroying their beloved creations and blowing up their wolves. You are the infiltrator. Since you are virtually silent, you need to sneak up and explode. Creepers can crouch, so use that to disguise your footsteps. You cannot explode unless within 4 blocks of a player, and you can still swell up and then explode when they get close. You can spawn anywhere it's dark, including underground but never a dungeon, and you can go into houses and go down their mine shaft if they leave the door open.
The Zombie
As a zombie, you need to survive on the front lines. You are the workhorse of the mob army and it is your job to get things done. You are the knight. Since you are the slowest and noisiest, it is best to team up with other mobs or just jump on them from above. You can spawn in dungeons if a player is nearby.
The Skeleton
As a skeleton, you are the ranger of the team. You have infinite arrows, but can only shoot at a limited speed, and it is best to strafe when firing. Since you are the only one with a ranged weapon, you need to shoot from afar. Also, try forwarding, or shooting in front of where they're running. You can spawn in dungeons, but only when humans are close.
The Spider
The spider is the most agile and can survive in daylight. Because you can climb walls, you need to make use of it. You will be a high priority target because everyone has to have bows to fend off creepers. Make sure to not let them do this. You will not be passive in daylight.
The Chicken
The chicken is the deadliest of all the mobs. You have a 1% chance of spawning as one and you can survive in day. You take no fall damage. Your job is to act like a normal chicken; clucking, laying eggs, and fluttering around aimlessly. When nobody is looking, you can go and explore their creations. When you look at a structure, you can go into a note mode and write notes, weak spots, and the such. When seen in note mode, your character will be staring up at the structure. Since you are 1x1, you can fit through the smallest hole.
There would also be a join random lobby button. It would bring you to a random lobby.
This will never be in minecraft as it is for a lot of reasons (not that I'll explain all of them).
Mobs the way they are now are to provide certain challenges and all, but if they were controlled by players, you would need different ones entirely, and they would all need to be balanced.
The thing I hate most about threads like this is that if you think about it, the players have an unbelievably unfair advantage. Ill give a few examples.

I see your inspired off of L4D, you know why that game works? All you can do is fight, and you have to run out into the open.
Reason 1: You can spawn ANYWHERE it's dark. In surface caves.
Reason 2: Spiders can climb walls.
Reason 3: I didn't say the height creepers had to be to explode. I said WITHIN 4 blocks of a player.
Then why not make it almost exactly like L4D? We should have Notch ask Valve reaaally nicely for L4D skins, put them onto the human players, and have only 4 human players on a team. Then make everyone else a mob.
Hell, the mobs in normal MC outnumber you 10:1 at any given point, why not continue it, eh?
Once somebody creates an obsidian box with a killzone in front (lava for walking mobs and a 2x1 entry way to prevent spiders), how would the mobs win?

If the mobs had good AI, and the obsidian is in a cave that isn't properly lit, and it takes about 30 obsidian to make a box, then you can't really do that without hacking.

Ummm, if you played minecraft you would actually figure out that you could. It's not easy, but it is possible.

Well I know it's possible. I'm just saying that it wouldn't be a cake walk.

Retired StaffOr, you could play L4D Versus.
