I suggest that Minecraft should have spikes. Firstly, the crafting recipe:
[] []
= redstone
That makes one spike. Then put 9 spikes in the crafting square to get a spike block.
You could connect them via redstone to levers, pressure plates and buttons so that when someone walks into a room you don't want them in, activate the spikes, they go up and do 2.5 hearts of damage a second.
To avoid being hit yourself by these spikes, position the pressure plate in such a way that only you will know how to get to your stuff.
I don't think mojang like multi-step recipes where items in-between do nothing but craft the next item.
Also if you are creative you can do this with lava and floodgates or cacti and a falling floor or many different other ways already,
Yes you can do it in many ways but this is a simple way. For people who don't like the build extravagant traps.

Making items to do something that is already fairly easy to do with blocks just stops people being creative, they should have to be creative if they want an awesome trap.
Did I say spikes were an awesome trap? No. If you want to be creative then be creative.
No, I don't think so. I think spikes would be like having spikes. Not a pre-built house. It's just a SIMPLER way of making something. It's like how people make huge mob traps, then people make smaller, compact versions of them.
There is nothing wrong with adding spikes to the game. They are different than cacti and would have many uses. What I don't like is your recipe. How about something like this:
[] []
= redstone
This would give you a stone block with a retractable spike in the middle. The spike would face toward the player when the block is placed.

Nice recipe.
