I really like that Notch is trying to make Redstone wirering more practical with the repeaters.
But i have an idea to make it even more practical. It is a electronics bench. This bench will be a lot like a crafting bench but you would be able to make NOT Gate, And Gate, Or Gates, Flip-flops, latches, etc. But it would make all of these circuits one block in size like the repeaters. I was thinking that the working space should be somewhere around 5x5.
A whole new crafting bench for this idea? No, you should be able to do it in the main workbench. Redstone doesn't have very many recipes to conflict with it anyway due to the fact that most Logic Gates do not need to be shaped like a Music Block, a Compass or a Watch. Rather than introduce an item SOLELY for this it would be better just to implement the old crafting bench.

craft idea for the electronics bench []
As a Red-Stone mage, and a Lover of Redstone... I actually disagree with this...
1) The Input and Output areas would be FAR to complicated to deal with.
2) It would be almost Impossible to "Hack" your own redstone, such as with a "Flip-Flop", I can look at a Flip Flop and put a system that Resets the Flip Flip to "Zero" regardless if it is on "One" or "Zero".
3) Redstone is meant to me complicated, and I like it that way =:happy.gif:=. I like being the only one on my Server who knows "The Red-Stone Magic" <--- Quote my friend.
This system would turn Red-stone Wizards like myself into nothing more than antiquity.
I disagree T_T, your heart is in the right place, but I do not like the idea.
I have posted this in several other threads as of late so ill paraphrase it here.
Red stone lines,
though redundant sounding this would make your and several others Ideas for a logic gate block pratical.
the recipe would look like this = redstone dust = smoothstone halfblock
now this block would look sort of like the redstone repeater in design, it would also lay out simmilar to one (as in it would point the direction you were facing), however it would function like redstone dust does currently, except it would only take input from only the sides the line on it touched.
When you first set it down it would face straight forward (not a crafting recipe)
with right clicking on it the block once, it would look like this. (once again not a crafting recipe)
with right clicking on it a second time, it would look like this. (takes input from three sides)
with click #3 it would look like this.
with click #4
click #5
and with click #6 it would be back to normal

A simpler solution would be to craft a new type of block (on the old workbench) that can cycle through the different types of logic gates.
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
