The idea of making axes required to chop trees has floated around for a while, but the problem has always been obtaining wood on the first day. I have discovered a solution.
The idea begins with an axe being required to chop logs. If an axe isn't used, the logs will drop nothing.
On the first day, the player will have to craft a simple axe (new name required), as well as a simple pickaxe, sword and shovel (possible but not recommended). These are crafted without a crafting bench in the 2x2 crafting grid, using twigs and pebbles.
Twigs are obtained by crafting a sapling into a twig. Twigs represent the handle of the tool when crafted. Twigs could have another use, such as making artificial plants.
Pebbles are obtained by punching through stone without a tool. Pebbles represent the head of the tool when crafted. Pebbles could have another use such as crafting into cobblestone.
Simple tools would be used on the first day only, as they would have little durability, and obtaining pebbles would take a while.
This would of course make the game much more difficult, and could possibly be turned off on that save/server.
I would quite like to keep my ability to punch down a tree. If we had to make those 'simple tools' for the first night, new players will have an even harder time trying to figure out what to do.
And the simple tools seem a little complex in my opinion.
Break a bunch of leaves.
Hope the leaves drop saplings.
Fuse two saplings together to make a twig.
Punch down solid stone.
Turn pebbles and twigs into a small axe and or pickaxe.
Cut down a tree with the small axe, and never use these tools again.
By now night has fallen and you have just been killed by a creeper/skeleton/zombie/spider.
It's too complicated. Just punch a tree, make a workbench, make some tools and torches, and survive the night.
Don't use the: "This can be toggled on and off" argument. It is not a good argument, and people will ignore it.
Not intuitive, and it would take so much longer to do everything. Also the axe would be so much different form everything else, and it wouldn't make sense to make your normal tools one way, but the only way to get the most important friggin' block in the game you have to do something completely different. I'm afraid this would just waste peoples time.

Creeper Jockeys, Because Screw Your Sense of Safety
Why limit yourself to moronic realism when the axes are only there to speed up log production and not be a neccesity to gathering wood?

Welcome to the forums, by the way. I'll be your brutally honest dream-crushing critic for...Well, your entire stay. So make your ideas good ones. [Diamond]
People didn't support my suggestion that punching trees should only give you planks; they're definately not going to support no drop and adding useless tools.

Wouldn't the simple answer be to start off a new game with a wooden/stone axe? That way, you can chop down the tree and then go from there (Since your argument seems to be that using your fists to chop down a tree is unrealistic) ...
well aparently grey acumen did made the same thing in his suggestions, and yes its a suggestion,it will implement,i guess.
His way was different. You punch leaves for sticks which make planks. Then you make a hatchet. With this you "find sticks and pebbles". And no, it won't be implemented. Because it's annoying and destroys the legacy of "punching trees". You might as well remove creepers.
Raw flint all by itself is a tool used by man to shape wood. So, punching tree with barehands gives nothing. Punching tree while holding raw flint chops off the log.

Other than that, my fists of steel always work.

Great server, great people. Join now!
Did you read my post? Seriously...

That's what I thought. Instead of breaking wood (which would not hurt your hands as much.) punch stone (which would most likly break your hand.).
