I think you should be able to have a finite map. Why would you do this? Because then you can have more control over what that map contains. You will have a full overview of the generated map, and have sliders to select things like amount of water, biome frequency, and stuff like that. This map won't be fullbright (so you can't see ores inside caves) and you can't see below the surface, maybe unless you use a cheat code. In addition, dungeons will be generated after the map parameters are set, so you can't see those in the map. I'm thinking of something kind of like in Sim City, before you actually establish your city. Maybe it would even have options like to add lakes, trees, lava pools, mountains, and stuff like that, as well as edit hills.

No. Selecting what you want is cheap and just cheap.
Then don't use it.
stupidest argument ever.

This selection would be for those who create those really awesome custom maps with mods. What he is saying is to Integrate those mods into a separate, single player option, allowing you to have a blank world which you can edit the terrain like you could in Star Craft Editor.
Plus. Who would you be cheating? It'd be single player. Minecraft is a game about playing your own way and not dying.
... that is unless your way of playing INVOLVES dying.

How is my argument stupid? If you don't like an option, you don't need to use it. That's no reason to take it away from the people who will. Or are you referring to PugRme's argument?

no, we already had had this in indev, we are not adding it back into the game.
Who exactly is, "we"?
I personally like this idea. I also agree with the "if you don't like it then don't use it" argument, and no it's not stupid it's true.
I think this would be more of a Mod, though, probably wouldn't be a part of the full game. Even better for those people who don't want to use it.

Reticulating splines.
No, I don't think we need to go back to having finite maps. If you want more control over the terrain just use some generator tool and import that chunk. You could limit the playable area by placing bedrock.
