The Minecraft Altimeter.
It does not give exact altitude (current block) of the player but is a scale that is zero at the adminium layer, midway at the block 63 layer and full at the stratosphere layer.
I don't think giving accurate readings would really be in the spirit of the Minecraft game 'feel' and that this visual scale would suffice for most players.
Visual:
The Minecraft altimeter would have the same design as a clock or possibly the compass with the pointer set to move between the three main level indicators. Different colour combination if using the clock method, with the black ( night) for underground, and the light (day) for above ground.
The compass variant would limit the pointer between the west/north/east positions ( 180 degrees) and obviously be a different colour.
Crafting:
I admit to not giving this much thought as it would be a similar combination to the clock or compass with the addition of some more redstone(?) - it's not essential to the design concept.
It could be as simple as crafting a clock and a compass together - although from a tech-tree perspective, it does not make logical sense.
Use:
When mining underground, you would at least know approximately where you were in relation to the surface or the adminium layer. Helpful when you are following a complex cavern system and get 'lost'
When building large scale constructions, you would know roughly how to plan the scale of your building without exceeding the 128 block limit.
I'd like it. I think it should just be a dial that has a vertical bar with a little horizontal line going across it. The line would rise and fall on the bar corresponding to your altitude. Nothing precise, but it'd give you a good estimate.
And in the nether the line should be permanently stuck on the bottom of the bar.
i did not know about that, interesting.
BUT, I think a craft-able altimeter should be implemented. all the stuff that comes up when you press F3 is pretty annoying when all you want is the height.
