Here's a block idea that will give people more options when designing contraptions with TNT.
The detonator would be a block made out of stone and iron.
[]
You would be able to place a stack of TNT inside the detonator. When the detonator receives a redstone charge it will prime a single block of TNT inside of it and cause it to explode. This explosion acts just like a block of TNT exploding at the detonator's position, except the detonator itself and the remaining blocks of TNT inside of it will be undamaged by the explosion.
A brief redstone charge that is turned off before (or when) the TNT explodes will only cause one explosion. A continuous redstone charge will cause each block of TNT to prime and then explode one by one until all the TNT is used up.
Now this explosion could also destroy redstone wiring systems. But you'd be able to power the detonator by powering any adjacent block. So you could place a block of explosion proof obsidian next to it, and power that to power the detonator. That way you could deliver a continuous charge without blowing up your redstone with the first blast.
What kind of contraptions could you make with this? A few ideas:
*An automated TNT defense system that rarely needs to be reset
*An obsidian trap room designed to kill anything inside without itself being damaged
*A timed fireworks display/pyrotechnic sign
*A timed series of explosive pulses that people would have to outrun or avoid in a challenge map
*Many other creative ideas
Yeah, I don't use TNT much myself. In fact, I think I've only made two and only blew up one just to see what it would look like. Despite that I still collect and save gunpowder from my mob trap, for no particular reason.
Oh and by the way, hitting the detonator with your hand would not set off the explosion. If you break the block it'd return the Detonator and the stack of TNT inside to you. You could manually light the TNT by using flint & steel on the detonator though, which would cause one and only one TNT block to prime just like a momentary redstone charge.
Here's an interesting idea. What if obsidian blocks placed next to the detonator, while blocking the explosion on that side, caused the blast to do more damage and travel a further distance from every other side?
So if you blocked off every side but one, you effectively have a cannon that can destroy a long line of blocks. If you block just some of the sides you could still use it to direct the blast and protect certain parts of your building you want to spare.

What do you think?

Sometimes, you just need a little more cave.
It's been suggested before? Hm, do you have the link?
Yes, but this lets you set up a series of explosions and allows for more advanced automation.
