Okay, so due to a recent loss of my girlfriend and my wisdom teeth, I have way too much time on my hands. Advil, icepacks, and Minecraft is a very thorough summary of my past few days.
Cruising the forums, I found a number of other people's takes on changes to the Nether, and the creation of the Aether. In my opinion, most of these "New Nether/Aether" topics are trying to add too much, and make the other realms way too complex. So I've decided to bring out my ideal realm.
Nether2.0
The main problem with the Nether right now is that it's a "vacation" spot. You go there, get some netherrack and glowstone, maybe build a house, fill up a dozen buckets of lava, and come back. Whatever you do, you're probably not there for very long. Unless you hack in some water and grass, it's a really dead, uninhabitable place. I understand that's what it's supposed to be like, but I still think we should be able to perform more of our minecraftian duties there.
First off, we need mobs.
Right now, we've got Ghasts and Zombie Pigmen down there. That's it. They are great mobs as they are, they don't need any changing. But with only the two inhabitants, the Nether is kind of an empty place. Since Notch only wants to have enemies that are unique to each other, these are actually great mobs for the Nether. We don't even need to imagine something unique enough to add to this, since we already have other mobs perfect for this: The Zombie and the Skeleton. They are classified as "undead" monsters, supposedly come back from "the depths of hell". Perfect. They would need to spawn less frequently though, since everywhere is dark enough for them, it would quickly become overrun. New additions: The only other monster I would actually add to the game is some kind of lava mob. But I'm exactly not sure how to go about creating a mob that spawns in lava and doesn't rapeshow at everything it does.
Farming. ("Somehow, I always knew in hell there would be mushrooms." ~Guybrush Threepwood)
It seems the only way to survive in the Nether is by bringing everything down from the surface. Then once you run out, you return to the mainland and bring more. As is, the only thing you can really farm is trees, provided you bring your own dirt and a sapling.
Water is a farming essential. It allows us to farm wheat, reeds, enemy mobs, and not only can we farm friendly mobs with it, but we can do a decent job of sorting them, too.
Maybe water could be brought into the nether, but it evaporates only when it touches netherrack, or blocks native to the Nether. That way we could line a pit with dirt or wooden planks to hold our water.
Then again, surviving without water is one of the fun challenges of the Nether. But if we can't have water, skeletons are a must. Bonemeal does extraordinary things when fertile land isn't possible, as with the Nether, 404 challenge, and other situations. New additions: Petrified plants? I think they should function the exact same as plants in the overworld, but they should be discoloured and take longer to grow. "Petrified" wheat would still give you regular wheat, but petrified wood would have a different graphic (similar to how "birch" doesn't stack with other wood, but acts the exact same). Also if they were inflamable, that would be nice :tongue.gif:
Mining.
The few (3?) new blocks in the Nether are wonderful, and they all serve some pretty sweet purposes too (slow mobs, light underwater, consistent flame... all great). I'm not asking for anything new. Again, I'm asking for the same things, but implemented into the Nether. Without minerals, there's no real reason to mine in the Nether. There's not even stone, so you need to make all your tools out of wood if you're going to live there for very long. (On that note, how did the Zombie Pigmen get golden swords?)
The one change I would make about the blocks in the Nether is the name of netherrack. There are so many better names for it: Firestone, hellstone, bloodstone... But I really thought anything even close to "Satan's tits" would have been ruled out right away (Now that I've made that comparison, I will no longer call it by it's real name). New additions: A new use for hellbreast. There's way more of it than we will ever need, and unlike cobblestone, not enough uses for it. Another line of tools, maybe. But nobody needs that many flaming devilboobs.
That's basically it for changes that should occur in the Nether. Notch added a lot of amazing content there, but left out all of the preexisting greatness.
Opinions?
If you guys liked this, and I can think up how the Aether could possibly function, I'll type up what I think could be done with that as well.

I don't like nether tools, and the other nether ideas are great, but you're right. The nether needs to be improved, but for now it would just be simply improved like this.

To be honest, I don't either. But there's just so much of that stuff, and so few things that need to be permanently on fire.
Everybody else's idea of a new Nether just seemed so impossibly complex and deadly. I thought I'd outline how it could be better and stay reasonable.

I think your idea is a bit too far in the other direction though. Sorry.
That's alright. IMO, it should stay as simple as possible. Let people do all the advanced stuff with mods, as they please.
It's just a bit too plain as it is.

Wow. Tried to think of something simpler than pong, but I just couldn't do it.
You win.

massive flamer here,
OT: this is actually not bad, i agree with you for most of the topic. +1 support :smile.gif:
