I know some people who have been complaining of the Nether portal sound (including me) and I think I have a way to fix it. All we have to do is make a nether portal On/Off switch. That switch will turn the portal on or off, therefore, turning of the ugly racket it makes. That way, you won't have to hack away at the obsidian for 15 seconds every time you don't want to hear the portal noise.
That's all I wanted to say. If you have any comments or feedback, please post below
I have a better, already available way to fix it: Break a block.

But I personally do not think the portal noise is annoying, you can disable it if you do not like it.

Solution: Put a dirt block in it and break it.
Doesn't work, you can not put a block inside a portal block.
Well nvm. You can turn off the sound.
Well, I hate turning of the sound because it takes away my ability to hear other things like zombie's groans and stuff like that. It get extremely uncomfortable to not be able to hear.
