Ok, so I read some threads about ideas for whales, and the general consensus was for things like this: whale oil (for lanterns), blubber, harpoons, etc.
I'm suggesting something no one else has suggested yet (I think). [Drumroll Please]
WHALE SADDLES
Actually that's not really the point. I've seen saddles for whales suggested before. What I'm suggesting is a new kind of saddle - one that you can build on. There could be a craftable whale saddle (perhaps made out of a bunch of pig saddles?) that when created can be placed on a whale and used as an underwater platform for building. I'm thinking it could be 30X30 with some invisible height limit, perhaps. Now of course, this would mean the whale would have to be massive (approximately 64 times the volume of a ghast!) and I admit, that this size might be a little too big, but the blue whale is the largest animal on earth. It's supposed to be big.
Now, because of its MASSIVE size, the whale should be rare. I mean really rare. Like rarer-than-a-spider-jockey-rare. I admit I'm not even sure if, given the ocean map generation and physics in the game, this mob would even be possible to implement...
EDIT: Actually I just thought of a solution to the whole size problem. Maybe there could be random size variations for whales. That way smaller whales are more common but they'll only be capable of holding a small one room shelter, while you'll have to go searching for larger whales in exchange for more space. One whale saddle would work the same way with each size of whale, though (to keep things simple).
The whale would also be tameable (not sure how at this point). That way you can actually control it. There's no sense in building an underwater base if it's just going to swim away without you.
So just think of the possibilities here. You could build a (relatively) small base and live an entirely nomadic lifestyle. You could "dock" your whale every once in a while to collect resources and just be on your way again. Or if you're one of those people who likes to spread out, you could use the whale as transportation between islands too far away to travel by normal boat. On SMP, captains can be appointed and the whales could be organized as a way of transporting players or supplies. "Cruise whales" could be used to show the sights to guests, at least so long as there is a traversable path for the whale to take.
I know this whole thing sounds silly, but I've actually put a lot of thought into this. I know a lot of people will read this and think, "Why whales? Why not just boats or something like that?" Well, frankly, if you ask me at least, boats don't fit in with the feel of Minecraft. These kinds of whales are just silly and whimsical enough to fit well in the game. I genuinely think Notch would like the idea, provided he and the rest of the team feel like coding it.
Like I said, I know this is silly. And I know this will most likely never get implemented, considering most people imagine whales in a completely different way than I do, but a minecrafter can dream right?
this is perilously close to falling off the front page.
but not anymore!
I love this idea. maybe a whale saddle could let you control from the whales' perspective, and docking it would make it stay there. feeding the whale would be a must. maybe if it gets caught in a creeper explosion, you could heal it by feeding it fish? (raw fish)
I love whales, and if they had a good enough drop, would give me reason to actually go IN the water.
The question is: would they be more killer whale (even though they are technically dolphins) or more humpback or blue? Or maybe even smaller, like beluga size? (Even though I'm fairly sure that belugas are also dolphins.)
Also, how would they prevent themselves from being beached?

Taking trolling to a whole new level, one post at a time.

I like this idea. just makes it more challenging to keep, and would actually give me a reason to fish.
notch hinted that whales would be in-game at one point.
I know. :tongue.gif: I would never have come up with this if he hadn't.

Dunno. I, personally, am hoping for massive blue whale size, but I'm worried about whether that's possible to code or if it would lag people's computers.
As far as beaching, I'm not sure. This kind of mob would no doubt require a fairly complicated ai.

At the size you are talking about, I don't think the whales would even fit into the current Minecraft oceans. Also, whales are supposed to be big, but not that big. They're really only like 20 times the length of a human, not 64 times the size of something that is much bigger than a human. Would they swim underwater? What would happen to your buildings? What if they decided to swim away without telling you? Why not just find an island?

Should just catch the fish on its own. (When fish are finally made a mob.)

Well actually, a minecraft human is 2 meters high so a whale measuring 30 blocks in length would be 15x the length. Regardless, I agree that 30 is too big. It was really just a number I plucked out of my head (and to be honest I don't really know much about coding. :/) I already said that you could tame it and make it stay. Also, islands don't move. :biggrin.gif:

hehe good point. You'd think a whale would be self-sufficient.

same way that squids do: they sink.

You mean raw? That would make sense. Cooked could give you six or something around there.
