As much as I adore my dogs they're mostly sitting in my house so they don't get in my way while I build my castle. Just now it occurred to me that it would be cool if you could throw a bone or a stick with the Q key and tamed dogs would fetch them for you.
Then it occurred to me that it would be even more awesome if dogs could fetch item drops in general for you. Basically once a dog approaches within a certain radius of an item it would run towards it, pick up as many items as its "inventory" could carry (perhaps a dog would have three inventory slots, or maybe just one), then return to you and drop the items at your feet so you could pick them up.
For example you could harvest your tree farm and the dogs would run around and bring you all the saplings as the leaves decay. Also when you're killing mobs with dogs they would bring back the mob drops to you, just like a real hunting dog would bring the dead bird or whatever to its master. You could also build obstacle courses for your dogs using dispensers, since they'd run towards the dispensed items.
minecraft uses WOLVES not DOGS
but a great idea indeed.

(Pushes zombie off cliff)
(Zombie dies and drops a feather)
(Dog jumps after it)
FUUUUUUU!
Maybe it would be coded so that they only go after items if they have line-of-sight to the item (this should already be in the game code; monsters only attack if they have line-of-sight to the player). So if an item falls off a cliff and they can't see it, they won't chase after it.
... or you tell the wolf to sit before pushing the zombie off. XD
Honestly if notch fixed the thing where dogs fall a lot I would use them more. It could be somewhat simple..
If a dog's path is over a drop that is 3 blocks or more, it will revert to the path the player took.

What if i'm in front of lava with my wolf and I press q on accident, the wolf will see it and then die in front of my eyes.
I say that dogs barking when in the 35 block radius of a Dungeon should be too, it would make finding them so much easier when just casually running around and not strip mining, but the only problem I have is, what happens to your dog if you strip mine to bedrock, does he sit up there or?

Get out there, kick the clutch, catch that rear end, and feel it.

If the item burns up in the lava quickly enough the wolf won't go after it. Besides, wolves don't need to be made immune to accidents. You always hear stories of people losing diamond picks and tons of loot because they weren't careful around lava. Same thing with pets; you just have to be careful.

I agree, so make them afraid of heights,(because they always take fall damage, even if there is water to break the fall)and then make them fetch!
*Sniff*

Anyway, this needs to be implemented.
