Yes, I know this has been suggested, but I have some points I want to make.
After reading stephen1341's thread on mud, I got the idea.
1.5 will feature weather, such as rain, snow, hail, thunderstorms...etc.
But what happens when dirt gets wet?
It becomes mud.
What is Mud?
Well, basically, mud is wet dirt.
It is a mix between a liquid and a solid, flowing, yes, but only to adjacent mud blocks.
But fear not! Mud will be dried by the sun! Much like grass is made.
The mud will act like no other block.
When it flows, it is a somewhat solid block. It is water, but it flows slower, and it slows you down as well.
When it is in block form, it is just a slippery block, somewhat like ice.
Remember: Mud can only flow to other ADJACENT mud blocks, and obviously: ONLY DOWNHILL.
What does MUD look like?
Brown, dark brown....
Duh...
Why Mud?
After reading Skip's idea, I propose that mud be able to be harvested.
However, because of the problem of being too common, only the source block can be harvested.
To harvest it, you need a shovel. ( perhaps a gold shovel...to provide a use for gold )
The source block will yield 4 mud "balls."
OR:
You can just pick up a source block with a bucket to get "mud."
These mud "balls" can be used as alternatives to clay.
1 Mudball + furnace = brick ( prefferably, a brownish hue. Ass opposed to the red brick of clay. )
And besides,
Mud is a no-brainer. When Notch implements weather, how could dirt NOT become mud?
OTHER THINGS:
When the Sun comes out, when not raining, the mud will vanish like grass grows on dirt.
Although, the mud will not turn back into dirt if beneath a tree, or in some other form of shade.
The Sun DOES dry up source blocks, so no need to worry about flooding.
EDIT: To further explain this behavior, mud source blocks will act as solids, unless there is a passage next to it to be able to flow. Even then,
Mud flow may only flow onto other mud blocks. If there is a dirt or stone block near the flow, the flow MAY NOT continue beyond the point where mud blocks stop.
AND! It would look pretty cool in swamps.
But mud cannot make infinite springs. So, in a way it is like lava.

if there was a mud block, even if it had no crafting use [like dirt], it would certainly make swamp biomes more realistic, especially if it had the properties of soul sand. because right now, no offense to the makers of this great game, swampland leaves much to be desired. it should be dark, overgrown with trees, full of boggy mud that makes walking difficult, and have lots of water pools.
