I came up with some items (some aren't new ideas admittedly) that would help fill in some of the missing items in game. Some of these would also necessitate/justify the addition of Oil. A quick list of the items:
-Wicks
-Lanterns
-Lamp fixtures
-Redstone Pole
-Miner's Hats
-Fire Arrows
-3 different types of Grenades
-Shingles
-Barrels
Let me know what you think. Any good suggestions I'll add into this post (with proper credit of course).
*FOR THE RECORD: Yes, I am aware that most of this has been brought up before. And Yes I have read forum rules. This is just some thoughts on how these items could/would incorporate into one another.
Some ideas on Oil:
-Found in the ground the same as water and lava, though perhaps more rare.
-Flammable: Will ignite if it comes into contact with Lava or if struck by lightning. Can not be extinguished by rain or if doused with water. Player can extinguish with sand. (Sand block is lost, oil block remains.) is replace by all other blocks (similar to water). NOTE: The Oil would NOT be explosive.
-Collected in bucket; one bucket provides enough oil for 3 craftables.
-Only way for player to light mobs on fire.
-If player of mobs are caught in it (submersed), movement is hindered (25-33% slower than normal)
-Can create Oil Slicks on which the player and mobs will slide around when walking.
New Item ideas (recipes included).
->Wick: One Wool and one Oil create 5 Wicks. For use in Lanterns and Lamps.
->Lantern: For use when torches are made to be no longer permanent; be made of either silver or gold depending on players tastes. Provides a permanent light source once fueled with Oil (place oil in block over lantern in crafting grid to add fuel). Can be turned on or off at will. Can be placed on top of blocks, on walls or hung on bottom of blocks (on a ceiling)

(yields 1)
-> Lamp post: Creates a light fixture for constructing lamp posts. Attachable to fence posts (top or side). Controllable via Redstone (see Electrical Pole below). Can be turned on and off at will. Can again be made of Iron or Gold. Wick
(yields 1)
->Redstone Pole: Once Fence and one Redstone. Basically functions as a vertical Redstone wire, but is a pole/post (who would have guessed...) Normal Redstone limitations apply.
(yields 1)
->Miner's Hat: A wearable light source. Made by combining a lantern and helmet (player's choice as to which, allowing for all the same advantages/disadvantages of the different armors) (yields 1)
-> Fire Arrow: Combine an arrow with oil, and you get a fire arrow. Extra damage (1.5x) against animals, zombies and spiders (will also cause them to catch fire), causes creepers to explode on impact, no damage bonus or chance of fire against skeletons. Also ignites trees/wood. Extinguished by water. Not reclaimable.

(yields 2)
-> Grenade: small throwables that could prove rather helpful. Detonate on impact. Stackable. This would allow for cheaper explosives, as well as a practical, offensive means of using them as well (give the creepers a taste of their own medicine!) (3 variants)
Explosive: Weaker than (perhaps about half as strong?)

Fragmentation: Well... it explodes (same as above) but launches small projectiles (5-10 blocks in all directions?)

Molotov/Incendiary: Sets a 3x3 area (or larger,no more than 5x5 though) on fire; sets all land mobs (excluding skeletons) on fire, again causing creepers to explode automatically. This is the only item that can light skeletons on fire. Burns for set amount of time (1 minute?) unless it hits tree/wood, in which case it the block burns as it normally would. Spread able:

->Shingles: One Oil, and one Gravel would yield 4 shingles. Would look something like an asphalt shingle. 1/4 block height. Could perhaps be fire-proof. Can also be dyed the same way as Wool. Perhaps they could be made to attach to walls as well? this way you could cover L shapes as well, allowing for complete roof coverage.
->Barrel: Made of Iron. Holds 60 Oil. Not stackable. Only way to store large quantities of oil, short of using a lot of buckets. Placeable similar to Chests, but must have a Bucket to retrieve oil from a Barrel. Can also be placed next to one another (they don't attach to one another) Stores Oil only. [] []

I appreciate you taking the time to submit a large post regarding this! I feel that oil would be a bit much, but nonetheless a cool idea. Can't you just imagine, you're mining or something and all of a sudden you're ROCKETED UP in the air by an oil spring. Unfortunately, it is near surface lava, which you in turn land in.

As a matter of fact, I did think of that. That's why I said it should only be flammable. I was honestly more afraid of inadvertently blowing up half the map.
The only explosives listed were the first 2 grenades, which both contain gunpowder rather than Oil.
That in mind, I'll be sure to be very clear that the oil itself would not be explosive.
As an afterthought though... wouldn't really be all too different than a creeper blowing you skyward.

Yes I am a ____________ Miner.
Yes I have no profile picture.
Yes that is a bad idea.
