Deep down, there should be petroleum puddles hidden inside all the rock and dirt. A bucket of petroleum/oil + water (for the hydrogen and oxygen) + sulfur = plastic. Plastic would open up a whole world of new items that can be made. Household things, scuba armor, pvc pipes, electronic systems instead of redstone, pretty much anything.
In addition, the petroleum can be another source of power, for things that won't work with coal.
This is a good idea for a mod, but not for minecraft. It really isn't needed. Replacing redstone with something more "realistic" is somewhat amusing but really a waste of time. getting redstone is fine without having to change it into something else interchangeable.
About the scuba gear, household things, ect, pretendign like those things is iron is good enough for minecraft.

El Lizardo: I agree, maybe petroleum and plastic isn't really minecrafty.... but the game currently lacks things to do once you acquire diamond tools/armor, and simply becomes a 1st person sim city. The game just needs more recipes, and adding new raw materials is a good way of prolonging the lifespan of a players' interest.
