(Sorry if this has already been suggested, search was down at the moment)
I think that spiders should have a 1/4 chance of dropping poison sacs, much like ink but poisony. The poison could then be used to create poison arrows (Replace the flint with poison sac) which would damage the enemy after the initial strike of the arrow. (Kinda like poison in Pokemon, but without turns and greater damage) Basically, after the arrow hits, the enemy flashes red about once a second or so and it does one heart of damage each flash. To make it so that it isn't an overkill, the poison wears off after 5 seconds.
And if you're carrying both types of arrow, the stack closest to the bow in your inventory could be used first. (Don't know about that, could be changed)
No need to poison anything when you can just light them on fire with flint and tinder, stab them with a sword untill they die, spam arrows into their faces, drop lava on them, drown them, and any other death machine that people have come up with.
If the enemy takes one heart of damage each second for 5 seconds, that's 5 hearts, plus the arrow does 2 hearts, totaling 7 hearts. I think maybe only 3 hearts from poison.

Poison arrows = un-needed and a waste of code.
