I would love to see future updates where there are multiple ways to do the same thing. One already implemented is the coal/charcoal thing. Both do exactly the same thing, but one comes from mining and the other comes from woodcutting (and furnacing). I like the option to choose how I want to play to get the materials I want. I'm not forced to mine unless I want the best ores. I'm not forced to go search above ground if I want mushrooms.
I hope this sort of mentality get expanded with things like maple syrup and sugar, etc.
I realize that there will always be the "best" way of getting something, and there will be no above-ground equivalent to diamond, but it can at least be made so that we can often get what we need in multiple ways, so we just pick the most convenient.
well, that would add a new aspect, but we would always go with the more convenient wouldn't we? That would ruin the one that isn't unless you have people that enjoy doing a tedious task just for the sake of more of a challenge.
And what's with all the "I do not support"? I think it's a relatively good idea, you would just have one easier yet inefficient, but the other harder, yet efficient.
Once you get into multiple means to a similar ends you have to worry about overlap. If two (or more) items can do the same thing, why use one over the other?
Everything must have a unique purpose to it, or else there will be unpopular items that will not be used that will need to be removed anyways.
TL;DR = More of the same is not always better.
EDIT: I did like the idea of coal/charcoal because, although they do the same thing, they must be obtained in different ways.
Out of desperation, charcoal is a very useful tool (even though it overlaps with coal).

Can I point something out? Read your post.
I get that its an edit, but still.
When I say convenient, I mean situation wise. Sure, coal may be better, but its more convenient to make some charcoal if you dont have a mine/cliff handy. Coal isn't always more convenient. Same could be done with other items.
As to the wrong forum, I was debating back and forth and then decided to put it here because coal/charcoal is already in the game. More wanted to see how people react to that sort of mechanic in the game than actually make it a suggestion.
for "base" items, i wouldn't mind multiple ways of getting them.
stuff like coal that can be attained in various ways would be nice since, as previously said, you may sometimes want to make a few extra torches but lacking the coal on-hand, charcoal is a slightly more "expensive" way of getting it (trees being are so damn easy to find & a renewable resource).
extra ways of getting some base crafting materials would be nice but regretfully there isn't many "base materials" that could require extra steps to get.
on the flipside high-end items, like armor or blocks that require several steps to build like the dispenser, should stay a one recipe item.
No debate there^^, it just seems like in the future Notch will be adding tons of new content like water mobs, ruins, new biomes, new items, etc. and don't all need completely new sets of base items and recipes. I feel like trying to make a completely new set of base items and advanced items for every new "area" minecraft moves into will just make it overly complicated and very lacking. Look at the nether, there are 3 blocks, 2 mobs, and almost 0 uses for anything that comes out of there.
i really wouldnt like the idea. the coal charcoal idea made sense, as thats how it actually works. it was also a very valuable resource base on which to help make so many other things, that could be exausted quickly. how many items could oyu really do this for without trying?

But this is the wrong forum anyway.
I don't think it's true, though...
