I think there should definitely be lightning rods! First of all redstone is already basically electricity, and lightning would bring electricity which would kinda just plain confuse things, but maybe instead you could attach lightning rods to the top of stoves, which would burn things for basically free, but only cooks sporadically when theres a storm.
perhaps made from iron like this
or made from a few iron blocks so its more of an investment.
Is there any other way you could think to harness lightning?

Please no. Lightning rods? No thx. I would rather use my precious iron to build armor, buckets, and tools. If you want endless fuel, use coal in a furnace to cook tree trunks. This makes charcoal, a literal clone of coal. You can make torches out of it, too. You get approx. 2 1/2 charcoal from one piece of coal, burning wood. Seriously though, redstone is perfect as is, only addition for redstone I support is bluestone.
However, what would you use a lightning rod for other than a furnace, which already seems extremely OP? If you say "powering redstone," I swear to god I will find you and break your keyboard. Redstone is already self-powered, thus making that idea null. A simple redstone torch too difficult to make?

So, you don't want lightning rods simply because you won't use them?
If you don't like them, it's fairly simple, you don't use them. Others might like them, they could attract lightning from storms so your house doesn't get damaged.
First of all I was trying to say it should'nt replace redstone, and also someone just gave the awesome idea of having it redirect lightning from hitting other parts of your house. Smart.

Lightning hitting redstone could cause it to become dangerously electrified and make any attached devices on the whole circuit start cutting on and off randomly as the lightning overwhelms the system, and after a brief period the charge would fade and the redstone would go back to normal.
Then lightning rods could basically just be redstone torches set above the surrounding terrain, making it the first target of lightning. This could be used to protect other parts of your base from lightning strikes (assuming the lightning can be made to focus on certain things based on elevation/materials) but ALSO could be used to create electricity traps by connecting a "lightning rod" to a room with a floor covered in redstone dust...which would all become temporarily electrified whenever a bolt hits the redstone torch high above.

There's yet more to come!
