So i was thinking that the first hostile water mob could be like a jellyfish. i would say sharks but notch already said that they would be too fast for the player, so the jellyfish would make sense in that case. They could also drop jelly which you could add to bread. Anybody have any other ideas about what they should drop or how jelly could be used?

I sometimes really wonder if Notch plays his own game. It doesn't matter how fast it is, if a shark attacks you, just punch it.
and yes, this is the barest fragment of an idea, it doesn't really qualify as a suggestion. No stats, no details on what type of jellyfish, how common they would be, where they would mostly spawn, what strategies t use against them. All of those things go towards creating a good idea.

Thank you for actually giving me some criticism, i will think about it. I just wanted to get the idea out there, and so i could hear some feedback.
-I would suggest they should be about a size of a chicken. They will not be mostly see through so you can see them better.
-For right now i would say two different types of jellyfish (names to be determined). The first one will spawn near the surface of water (within three blocks) and be a dark orange/brown color making them easier to see. The second will spawn in dark areas of water ((level light 7 or less) so down by the sea floor or at night) and they would have a slight green glow to them, while remaining slightly see-through.
-They will both spawn in about a pack of 5-7, and when you attack one they will not all come attacking after you.
-They would have six hearts of health.
-They would be just as common as squids and as far as spawn area, i dont know if the game has a difference between rivers, ponds, oceans/seas in the code or not, but i would like for them to only spawn in the ocean (if not then large bodies of water).
-I know for them to drop jelly makes no sense but thats what i would like, but i also like the idea of them dropping slime balls. That would make obtaining slime balls a little easier. Dropping between 1 and 2. 2 happening 15% of the time.
Any other suggestions, ideas or criticism?
